Default HTC is convinced that the cupcake update will legitimately make it to the T-mobile G1

HTC has reason to believe that the cupcake update (or at least most of it) will likely be making it to the T-Mobile G1 as a legitimate over-the-air update. Needless to say HTC is not a part of this update so they are not in charge of deciding what ma... Read more

It would help if Google and T-Mobile would come out with a yeah or nay as to whether they plan on using the cupcake update. Come on T-Mobile grow a pair and give us some info one way or the other

There was a ridiculously crap article at AndroidGuys (I'll leave it to you to find and read it...it doesn't warrant being spread around here) that speculated that the G1 might never see it, because it is in "bad shape" and really unstable on the G1. My first thought when I read it was "DUH!! It's not finished, and the source they have out that people are compiling is just the OS! It doesn't have the G1-specific hardware drivers or anything..."

Fortunately, Dianne (those in the know know who that is) responded to that stupid thread saying:

Your informant doesn’t really understand how Android operates as an open-source project. The “cupcake” branch that we have is a work-in-progress on the next major feature set for the android platform. Things like video recording don’t work because… surprise, it’s not yet done. The current code that exists as cupcake is almost but not quite feature complete, which means that it is pre-alpha — no QA at all has started on it yet, since the basic features are not quite yet implemented.

So at some point “cupcake” will become a final release candidate (RC) after going through alpha and beta testing/fixing, at which point it becomes the most recent stable android platform that people can build production phones off of. That will actually be our first RC quality code in the open-source tree, since what is there from before them is based on the 1.0 RC that was the basis of the G1 software but required a number of changes (which are not tested) to be able to make it publicly available.
Notice how she uses the pronoun "we" in there, and speaks with authority? Dianne Hackborn. Rings Extended. She's a major Google Android employee, and she knows her stuff. She can be a little gruff. Probably too much testosterone.

In spite of all of the "in the know" discussion via Dianne, there still is no confirmation cupcake branch is coming to the G1. In fact, the article you use could easily be used to imply that cupcake was never intended as a G1 update, but rather a general OS update that may or may not be applied to any particular phone.

Also, their own dev team has already stated that cupcake probably will not be added to the G1 version of the OS. Came from Dianne's own team in the same Google forums.

Also, Engadget and others are using an "assumption" from HTC as a counter-punch to Android dev team saying it probably will not be part of the G1 OS update. I venture that Jean-Baptiste knows just a little bit more of what is going on than HTC does in regards to the Android dev plans.

Cupcake is not coming to the G1. The main framework update will, since it is the core of the OS and common for any device using Android. The fact that cupcake has video recording acceleration now is evidence that cupcake is a general enhancement and not for G1. The 7201a has video recording acceleration disabled, as per the copyright suit against Qualcomm, which makes the 7201a. Europe may get it, but not North America will not, assuming it is possible. If the function was disabled on die, firmware or software will not fix it.

That's a moot point. Once they've finalized the cupcake branch into a RC-quality build, as she puts it, no one will have any problem compiling it (the source) for the G1, even if Tmo/Google were to make the official G1/Dream Rc31/v1.1 an 8-bit C64 emulator with a Nokia 1100 feature set. It's the beauty of open source, as she's saying in the quote above.

True dat!!

My point was most of us assumed we would see all this goodness through an actual Tmo rom release for the G1. Not happening.

Can you say "custom firmware"? With root available to just about anyone willing to take the plunge now, even if cupcake does not come to the g1 (and if it doesn't, I'm leaving t-mobile for whomever has it), I'm sure that someone will be able to incorporate features from it in a modified firmware for the g1.

the touch screen keyboard should be easy to implement on the g1 because there is an app o the market that allows u to search google and youtube on a touchscreen key board (qsearch android market)now they should just have that for texting and everything else.
