Can you say "custom firmware"? With root available to just about anyone willing to take the plunge now, even if cupcake does not come to the g1 (and if it doesn't, I'm leaving t-mobile for whomever has it), I'm sure that someone will be able to incorporate features from it in a modified firmware for the g1.
