Google gives employees "Dream Phones" for holiday bonuses

What happens? You damn well say "thank you". Companies are not actually required to give out any bonus. My company didn't give me anything for christmas, and yeah the pinch is on for christmas, but you know what? I still have a job, I'm still making the mortgage payment, and so do my coworkers (no layoffs for us). Thousands (is it millions yet?) of others got the axe in the last few months.

The only part that's kinda crap is this bit: "Q: I already have an Android phone. What happens to my holiday bonus?
These phones are a personal gift. We hope you will put them to good use! Please do not resell them as this is against Google [policy link removed]." I guess you could give it to a spouse or something, but still, that sucks.

Agreed. Well if they can't sell them, maybe they can donate them to charities and write off the difference? It does kinda suck though if there was an expectation of cash. And Google employees who dutifully signed up with T-Mobile still have a locked phone and contract... But I guess it's better than nothing it all. Hopefully there won't be too much resentment from Google employees and they'll see how thoroughly cool the phones are and develop awesome apps with their 20% accordingly

If any Google employee reading this is pissed that they didn't get their CASH bonus, they need to wake up and smell the coffee... The economy is terrible, high tech purchasing INCLUDING AD sales is way down. Do they expect the idiot company approach of paying out the cash bonus then doing mass layoffs... Humility is rarely present in High Tech, with the worst offenders, Banking and Finance eliminating or greatly reducing bonuses due to government intervention it made sense for Google not to stick out as "handing out cash to employees who have paying jobs" vs the pain a lot of people are going through who have been laid off. Many won't have a jolly Christmas this year - just remember that.

Smart of Google to can the cash bonus. Would have been smarter NOT to give the G1 in replacement of the cash bonus - e.g. position it as "you were getting this anyway even if we still had the bonus cash"
