Hey guys,
I'm not a Skype user, but I know there's a lot of hype about it, and a lot of people want it for the phone. T-Mo specifically said the day of the announcement that they were actively trying to keep VOIP off their network. SO I was surprised when someone confirmed for us the other day that there's already a Skype client in the market. And when I checked out the app Saturday, it does indeed say it can make calls to other skype users and landlines via the Skype network. Well, I've looked into it a little further, and found out the following: It's not VOIP. --At least not on your end. It uses intermediate servers to turn your voice calls (being billed to you as minutes) into skype calls. This server also sends your data (text chats and such) over the skype network. Basically, it just seems to "translate" your regular phone use into skype-compatible communications. It's pretty cool if you ask me, but I know some of you won't care for it. Just passing the info along. Read more at: http://skypejournal.com/blog/2007/10...oipless_m.html

It makes sense. At least now it seems like a win-win situation for T-Mobile and Skype. Good find.

What does this application do? I've tried looking for answers here at AC but I can't find any.

![]() Skype for your mobile is a mini, beta version of Skype that you can download on to your mobile. You don’t need to switch operators or get a specialised phone. The software is free – although there might be a small data charge from your operator if you download it straight to your mobile. Contacts in your pocket With your Skype contacts on your mobile, you’ll always know when your friends are online. Call them from the bus, check their presence from the park, or send an instant message while you’re sipping a latte in your favourite coffee shop – wherever they are in the world. Talk or instant message You can call or instant message any of your contacts who are using Skype on their computer or mobile device, including the 3 Skypephone. You can even start a group chat just like you would on your computer, so you can organise party plans from the comfort of your couch or co-ordinate fancy dress direct from the costume shop. Will it work in my country? In this beta version, anyone can receive calls, instant message and see who’s online. If you want to call phones, mobiles, or any of your Skype contacts, this is limited to people in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden and UK There You Have It... check out www.skype.com for more information about the app. (Note: Go To This Site Just To Get Information About Skype... Information about this app on this site has nothing do to with the skype thats going to be on the Android. Im directing you to this site so you can have an idea of what skype is about.)

Seems like it'd be very handy for making international calls free during nights and weekends (for those who have free nights and weekends), and having the option of using peak minutes instead of paying international rates some other way isn't bad either. |
