Thread: New cupcake versions of apps

Default New cupcake versions of apps

Like me, you might have found that some of your favourite apps no longer work on cupcake. If you do a search on the market place for 'cupcake', you will find a few items that are cupcake-compatible versions. In fact, those versions tend to be cupcake *only* so stick with the others if you are not ready for cupcake.

It seems the devs have worked around the problem of dealing with two versions of android by simply releasing two versions!

Three notable apps have been updated:

Toggle Settings is an app that lets you toggle a number of different things from a quick link in the notification bar. Examples include Airport Mode, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and Silent Mode. There are up to 8 profiles that you can name yourself. In each profile, you add all the things you would like it to change when invoked and set the status. For example, my 'Nightime' profile has the setting "Airport mode -> On" for when I want to use it as a low-powered alarm clock.

I have a profile called 'Normal' in which I set all the settings to my favourite ones. I have then created a 'Low Battery' profile which sets everything to more economic settings - screen dimmed, ringer turned down, notifications silent, wifi/gps/bluetooth off.

The app also has rules that can automatically switch to profiles. I use one to switch my low battery profile on when the battery drops below 20% and I have another which turns my phone to my 'Nightime' profile at midnight and back to 'Normal' at 9:30am the next day - really low battery usage and everything quiet except for the wake-up alarm. It's handy for when a mailing list item dropping into gmail at 3am is waking you up with a notification!

There are a couple of bugs, wifi doesn't seem to turn on when in a profile ( correction: see note below ); 3g->2g and GPS state are active as possible toggles. Both seem to be due to changes in cupcake.

It's worth a look and supplements Android very nicely.

aHome and GPS Status both have new versions up that work with cupcake.

aHome still has a few small issues: renaming icons does not persist across reboot - very annoying when you like to rename them all and the new cupcake widgets don't render their alpha stuff properly (transparency, in other words).

GPS Status is running fine. The only real issue you might have with cupcake is if (like me) you have enabled auto screen-rotation then you might find that it switches to another view when you're playing about with tilt but that's a minor thing and tilt is something that most people aren't really bothered about.

    Note on wifi toggle

If your profile is in airplane mode and you switch to one with airplane off and wifi on, it tries to turn the wifi on too early and it fails. I found selecting the profile again after airplane mode had switched off sorted wifi out, but it's not ideal. They could do with putting a delay on wifi when switched in a profile.

All the Toggle Settings does is take you to phone settings to turn on GPS etc. You can do the same thing with a Settings shortcut.

That's not the full story. The settings to enable GPS have been broken out into two options in the settings menu in cupcake - GPS wifi and GPS sat. Apparently, the interface to these has changed in cupcake. All the other items directly toggle that feature and don't launch the system menu to do it.

It seems that apps can't turn on the GPS directly, even google maps takes you to that screen.

Yeah, they changed the permissions completely to use prompts. Also, network based GPS has been broken out from using just the coarse GPS permission, to also needing the network state permission.

The changes they made royally messed up my app and forced me to rewrite the entire GPS module. I complained about it for awhile, but honestly it's the way it should've been from the start.

New version of chompsms is up. Install the standard one if you have cupcake, there is an alternative for non-cupcake users.
