HTC Sync not detecting my ChaCha

A common theme, I know, but I haven’t found any response that cures this (just loads of people with similar problems)!!

The problem: HTC Sync 3.0.5617 doesn’t detect my HTC ChaCha.

Details:
Windows XP SP 3 does detect it and installs it as drive F
I’m using the original HTC cable
Windows Firewall has an exclusion for HTC Sync
AVG Free 2012 Anti-Virus (Resident Shield) is off during installation of HTC Sync and my tests
AVG Free 2012 Anti-Virus has exclusions for htcupcloader.exe and the folders for
HTC
HTC BMP Driver
HTC Driver
HTC Sync 3.0
USB debugging mode is on on the phone

I’ve tried:
HTC Sync 3.0.5617
HTC Sync 3.0.5606
HTC Sync 3.0.5606 with an update of Adobe AIR to 3.1.0.4880
All five USB ports on my PC
Restarting the phone between HTC Sync installations
Doing a ‘battery-out’ restart of the phone.

And now I'm stumped!

An HTC ChaCha. No idea who comes up with these names...!!
