Question about 3.5mm Headphones w/mic

If I had a pair of iphone 3g headphones that come with the mic, and i hooked it up to the g1 with the micro usb to stereo adapter, would the microphone work?

The adapters are female and therefore you cannot easily see if there are four contacts or just 3. Also, the product descriptions do not answer the question.
