    Default google phone

Google introduced its competitor to the iPhone - Nexus One - in January 2010. The device, which was built by HTC, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, has a 3.7-inch screen and runs the latest version of Google's Android operating system.
Nexus One's introduction comes more than two years after Google decided against confronting the iPhone directly. The company announced in November 2007 that it would give away Android, a package of software that manufacturers can install in any phone. Its goal was to cash in on the effort by selling advertisements to mobile phone users, just as it does on Internet-connected computers.
The stakes are huge, as the mobile computing market could prove to be larger than the PC market ever was.
Americans now are buying more Android phones than iPhones, and analysts say that by late 2011 Android will have erased the iPhone’s once enormous lead in the high end of the smartphone market. Despite the iPhone's success, Apple suddenly has a real fight on its hands.
Initially, the emergence of powerful mobile phones put Google's leadership into question. As people increasingly rely on phones instead of PCs to access the Web, their surfing habits are bound to change. What's more, online advertising, Google's bread and butter, could lose its role as the Web's primary economic engine.
But as the number of people with Android phones grows, Android will grow more attractive for app developers. For now, Apple’s App Store, with more than 250,000 applications, enjoys a large advantage over the Android Market, which has about 80,000. But that edge may not last, especially as many developers fret about Apple’s tight control over the App Store.
For now, the smartphone market is growing so rapidly that the rise of Android has not necessarily been at the expense of the iPhone. That will change as the market matures.
Analysts say Google is prepared for a paradigm shift, and Google executives say they are confident that the company will thrive as the mobile Internet grows.
