Very good info. I was just about to purchase one. Good looking out!
I bought a cheap case that is perfect for the G1, the only problem is...the holster has a magnet snap! The magnet snatch ruined my compass! it is no longer working properly. It will only move the map up and down and not left to right. I have tried rebooting the phone and keeping it out of the holster for almost a full 24 hours! my compass still will not work right.
I didn't even think about the compass and how magnets affect them when i bought this case and i am sure there are a bunch of others that won't either!

....It's a virtual compass, how did the magnet mess it up?

This is good to know cause I was just about to use my tmo wing case for my g1 since it fits snug... but do we have to worry about all magnetic fields ex) security wands, checkout counter at bestbuy or department stores, etc... if so the compass is a bad idea if ti can be damaged by a weak magnetic force of a holster!!!!
Mods: Can anyone get a definitive answer on this? It would be nice not to have to worry about our accesorries too.
I am assuming that low magnetic force will mess up the compass while its near it, but when you think about having that same magnetic force pushing on the compass for hours on end. I got my phone on Monday and besides the Battery and creeking the phone has been fine. Everything worked perfectly! Well Friday i received my new holster and have been using it since. Well i read a post on either this forum or XDA, that spoke about a magnetic holster messing up their compass....so i checked mine in 5 different areas and it does not work anymore. I can make it look up or down but it will not go side to side...I have not dropped it or anything. The only thing that has changed is the holster...The compass mode is something i used to show off the phone to everyone and i know for a fact that it was working before i got the holster.
So being an IT person for many years the troubleshooter inside me traced back where the issue can be and the only thing that has changed is the holster, not to mention i read about another person noticing the compass not working after having a magnetic holster also. If you do some research you can see how easily a compass can be damaged by magnets and certain types of metals.
Buy the rumor, Sell the news.
that sucks =/ i would shy away from magnetic cases period... the only ones that i haven't seen mess up a phone is the magnet used in blackberry cases/sleeves to turn your screen on and off...
generally, bring a magnet anywhere near a consumer electronic device is a nono

So I guess I will rely on some Ol' school advice and be safe rather than sorry.
