First off, to save you some time, it doesn't work with the G1.

Just got this gizmo for my birthday. I'd been coveting it for a while, since I do a lot of Geocaching and was sick of having the G1 run out of juice in the middle of the woods. I did some research and figured it'd be ideal, since 4 AA's should have enough energy to keep it running all day.

Got it home, put in some fresh batteries, plugged in a mini-USB cable and...nada. The mini-USB cable charges my phone fine fine when plugged into the computer, but not this thing.

Turns out, the thing doesn't have a voltage regulator, or at least it doesn't seem to work. The lights light up, but the thing's putting out 6.3 volts, way over the 5 volts that a USB port should be. Stay away from this piece of junk. It could fry your phone. Grrr...
