Re: Will Android support "Google apps for your domain"?
I found the solution to getting an Android phone to use Google Apps as the default (first) account which will then allow you to sync your Google Apps calendar on your phone.
The original error that was received when trying to make a Google Apps account the default account on the phone was:
"This account cannot be used on the phone because it is missing the following application: Google Talk"
I tested this solution on a Motorola Droid (Android 2.0) and it worked, and since this is an issue with Google Apps settings, and not Android, it should work with all flavors of Android.
Before you go any further please be advised that this procedure requires a factory reset of your Android phone which normally isn't a big deal if you selected to save your setting on Google when you first added your account to the phone and logged into your phone for the first time. However since we are changing the default account on your phone from your Gmail account to your Google App account you will lose all your settings and downloaded apps.
For this reason I strongly recommend that before you proceed any further you take the time to write down all the apps and widgets that you downloaded from the "Android Market" because you will have to manually download them again once you activate the phone using your Google Apps account.
Please note that you will not lose any of your contacts or email as long as you add the previous installed Gmail accounts after you have successfully installed your Google Apps account.
If you are a Motorola Droid owner I also suggest that you go to Motorola's web site and download their "Media Link Software" under the "Software Updates & Drivers" section of the page using the link below, and after installing the software perform a backup of your phone. This will ensure that all your media (pics and vids) are backed up. You can never be too careful.
1. Login as the Google Apps Administrator and select "Manage this Domain" to get to the Domain Dashboard.
2a. Check to see that "Chat" is listed as one of your services.
- If it is listed select the "Chat" service and disable it.
- Wait about a minute and then enable it again. In about 30 minutes it will become available. you can now skip to step 8.
2b If you do not see "Chat" listed as one of your services perform the following:
3. Select the "Domain Settings" tab and under the "New Services and Pre-release Features" select: - "Automatically add new services when they become available" (mandatory selection)
- "Enable Pre-releasee features" (optional selection)
4.Then select "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page.
5. Now use this URL to activate Google Chat in your Google Apps domain:
Make sure that you replace YOUR_GOOGLE_APP_DOMAIN_NAME.COM in the URL above with your Google Apps domain name
6. If the Chat service is not added, add the service and enabled it, If the you see that the "Chat" feature is already added and active, disable it, then wait about a minute and then enable it.
7. Go back to the Dashboard page again and you should see that "Chat" is now listed as one of your services and in about 30 minutes it will become available.
8. Once the "Chat feature is available on your Dashboard you will need to reset your Android phone tofactory default.
9. On your Android phone go to Settings, Privacy and follow the instructions to reset your Android phone to factory default.
10. Once the phone reboots you should be able to login to your Android phone by select use an existing Gmail account and then using your Google Apps account's email address and password.
- Make sure you use your complete Google Apps email address as your Gmail user name For example: username@domainname.com
11 As part of adding the Google Apps account to your phone make sure you select the option to backup your phone's settings to Google (just in case you ever have to rest the phone, or get a replacement)
12. The phone will then sync your email, contacts and calendar from your Google Apps account.
13. Then go back to "Accounts and Sync" and add any Gmail accounts that you previously used on the phone to sync the contacts and emails from those accounts

Re: Will Android support "Google apps for your domain"?
I wonder if anyone on this thread can help me.
I'm looking to purchase an android phone, and would like to be able to use my google apps domain as my primary login, but would also like to be able to use my corporate exchange account on the phone.
I assume that there will not be the slightest issue in adding in the exchange email as a separate inbox, but am curious as to whether android will be able to handle the calendar and remote address book retrieval functions of our exchange setup.
Re: Will Android support "Google apps for your domain"?
It remains a mystery to me... the difference between Google contacts, Google contacts for your domain, Gmail contacts, etc. There doesn't seem to be any place (with the possible exception of above in this forum), where I can find out exactly what to do to get my GAFYD mail, contacts and calendar up and running in my android phone (HTC Hero). Is this all going to gets solved by Android 2.1?
I simply started the phone using my Main google account (under my own domain) but find the contacts is some very old list from goodness knows where.
