UK G1 user, WHERE IS MSN IM??

Ok I'm not amused. I researched this phone before getting it. I GOOGLED it, and every single review says the same thing "you can use it with msn messenger, yahoo messenger". blah blah blah.....so I get it, bring it home and.........umm....where's msn messenger? just googleTalk, and then a big blank area below it........so the UK version doesn't have msn messenger, is this some kind of joke? is it possible to use msn messenger with it??

The Uk Version does not appear to come with anything other than Google talk. However there is an app in the marketplace called IM+ which does.

Incidently if you have a question it's always good to use the search funtion as we have allready covered this here.

I saw the other post, but it doesn't seem to be relevant to UK users. Just as all the reviews online say that msn is available, everyone in that post was just as confused about it as I am, and I hoped that putting a new post up would shed some new light on the situation as all those chat apps being in it, has to be a pretty big reason why lots of people are getting it, and the fact that it doesn't have them, need's to be brought to peoples attention.

any idea's why msn is not there in the UK version??

I noticed the following:

US G1, unlocked, I live in Switzerland, Europe.
When I start application, I can select google talk, msn, a.o.

When I choose MSN, I can enter my userid and pass. Then he tries to connect. After a few seconds there is a message that tells the following:

Unable to sign in to the MSN service. Please try again later. Detail: Sorry, the phone number cannot be read from your SIM card. Please contact your operator.

So I think he connects to some TMOBILE server and there something he wants to do. Perhaps that's the reason why they have token MSN from the UK phones, because they are not able to connect to the US TMOBILE servers or perhaps the US servers dont know about the numbers used in UK.

Uh, the internet doesn't always provide all the answers. Especially in this case where most of the pre-launch discussion of the G1 seems to be in the US. Heck, I can't even find any UK specific forums discussing the G1 when I was looking to see the UK response to the potential release of the phone, so that may explain why you can't find any info on that.

Any you guys try contacting T-Mobile UK? BTW, I wouldn't pay for any instant messenger. Android is open source afterall and if you guys are lacking a MSN client I imagine it won't be long till one shows up in the Market. Just use Meebo for now.

IM+ works fine in the UK to connect to MSN by the way - but it's a really poor-quality, unstable and ugly app in no way worthy of your $20.

A friend of mine speculates that the reason IM doesn't support anything other than Google Talk in the UK is to do with licensing agreements with Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL and so forth, since their IM networks are not nominally open to any other clients (although plenty of alternative clients do exist and work fine of course).

I'm really hoping this is going to be resolved fairly shortly, as the majority of people I IM use MSN. I'd actually prefer that they used Google Talk (or some other federated XMPP account), but short of buying them all a G1 I can't see them switching.

Same problem on my UK G1. Only Googletalk available from IM option.

I did contact T-Mobile about it. The lady I spoke to was very helpful but unfortunately as she wasnt part of the tech team (2hr wait to speak to them) didnt know a great deal about the handset itself. I directed her to the phone manual available online which shows how to set up msn/yahoo/aim messengers http://www.manuals.t-mobile.co.uk/ma...?manualid=2555 (Select 'Messaging' from scroll down topics menu and then 'Instant Messaging') and explained it was missing from my phone.
She then managed to get hold of a handset and these options were present on the phone she had. Couldnt explain why. Suggested I take it back to the store to see if they may be able to help.

Defo need some answers about this from T-Mobile.
