a device that can multi-task should have a program to manage the processes that are going on in case one is taking up too much resources and making the rest of the applications run slowly. Will android have this functionality?

Good question, I was wondering the samething. Especially with all the stuff were going to be puttting this phone through.
Looks like its not an actual "Task Manager" though, but really a "Recently Used" list. The Android OS will auto kill anything thats using too many resources and not being used. Then when you go back to using the app that was auto-killed it will start running again like it was never killed. I like the moon analogy.

Having had my G1 for almost a week now I think this is the BIGGEST thing that is missing from Android. I don't care if Android can suspend applications and resume them (don't get me wrong, that is an AWESOME feature) but on a platform that is supposed to be open and allow users to control how they want their phone to function a task manager is important..... even if it has to show tasks that are "considered" running. I have been playing with my phone for a while now and this includes installing lots of applications.... after I used my phone for a while I notice that things are "jumpy" ... what I mean by this is things like drawing my unlock pattern will completely miss a dot because the system locked up for a split second. The same occurs with scrolling.... I'll move my finger and nothing happens and then as I go to do it again the screen takes off and scrolls the entire way down the page, again because of a momentary lock up. These are things that I expect to happen when I'm application happy but its really an issue when I can't see what is actually running and what is possibly causing this problem so I can get rid of the program. I really do hope someone adds a task manager application because I think it is desperately needed.
Theoretically, the G1 doesn't need a task manager, or a memory manager, as the OS kills and clears as/when needed.
That said, the Android does end up going quite laggy from time to time, and sometimes needs a kick in the right direction.
MemoryForLemmings -
This app kicks your G1 into doing a memory clearup, if its in the middle of a go-slow, then give it a try.
Service Viewer -
Written by David Bickley, this app will let you know exactly whats going on with your phone and give you FAR more info than you could possibly need. Very handy.
Task Manager for Root Users -
This was origionally availible on the marketplace, but seems to have disappiered. As it says in the name, it only works for users with root, but I find really handy to be able to kill things off. If you can't find a copy on your own, then please contact me.
AppManager -
This isn't so much memory management, but you need some free on the device. If I have less than (about) 20mb free, I find the phone gets on a go-slow and I need to delete some Apps. AppManager let you backup and install apps from the SD card, letting you backup infrequenty used apps and re-install them without needing internet.
-oh, all the pages on cyrket.com (*the* marketplace web interface) have a 2D barcode next to them; get Barcode Scanner installed and scan the barcode to load the app in marketplace on your phone
Hope this helps someone.
Can someone help me get the source code for the ServiceViewer and AppManager applications??? Are they available for free???
Thanks for ur help in advance..
