I think they are stuck at the WEP encryption.
or are you trying to use something like airtunes to stream over your g1? i too am confused.
you shouldn't have to fiddle with your IP address at all... if it is the external IP address that you are referring to, that is not needed at all for internal network access... if it is your internal IP address that you're talking about, if you have DHCP activated on your router that should take care of it automatically (looks like 192.168.xxx.xxx)...
most of the time you don't need to deal with either of these... what you are probably referring to is the MAC address of the G1... in order to obtain your MAC address, do the following on your phone:
Menu > Settings > About Phone > Status > Wi-Fi MAC Address...
in order to see the status of your MAC address, you need to enable your wifi, in other words make sure its turned on...
as far as your router goes, i need more information on that before i can help you further... if its a linksys router, you need to access a computer that already is enabled to access your wireless network... if MAC filtering is activated, you will need to add a filter for your specific device in order to give it permission to access the network...
for other readers, this is the RECOMMENDED way of securing your device to your wireless network... it goes by unique MAC address preventing any random user access to your network, even if they find out your WEP key

Buy the rumor, Sell the news.
Read this post i made a while back:

Also make sure you have bonjour enabled in Services.
You can check it by going to START > RUN > SERVICES.MSC
Look for Bonjour Service and make sure its started and not disabled.

"pairing the the phone and network"? I'm a bit confused by your Bluetooth terminology.
I'm sorry for the improper grammer in the original post as you would't be able to tell, i was in a hurry. Andonnguyen's post should be a sticky as it was very easy to follow. thanks a million. also, thanks for ur help to tread!!... Is there anyway to download from my comp to the G1 thur iTunes?
Tunes Remote is not able to stream from the comp to the g1.
However, if you download Gmote from the marketplace, and then the gmote server for your computer at http://gmote.org , you are able to stream music from your computer to your phone, and it works perfectly with very little buffer. It also has many other features I won't mention here, but I can assure you its worth checking out.
