Does anyone know if something similar to SMS Barrage is still available and working on 1.6? I used to use SMS Barrage a lot, for contests on radio stations

Nice! It works with the latest OTA update

Is this an older APK or a recently released one? I'm trying to see if it was compatible by chance, or if the developer is back in action. I found his site saying he's going to start working on it again, but that was a couple of months ago.

Just remember, in most countries it is illegal to harass people using mobile phones. If the recipient complains to their network provider or the police, you will almost certainly be ditched by every network, and at worst fined of jailed.

Does anyone know if this could be used to crash a phone (dumbphone or smartphone)?

    Probably not...

A very dumb phone won't even use internal memory for SMS storage, and all SMS messages will be stored on the SIM card. This has a limit to how many messages it can store (something low like 4, or 16). After that it requires the user to delete existing messages before new ones are downloaded from the network.

A dumb phone is similar, it'll just continue until its message memory (usually 1000s) is full. At which point the user is informed there are more message waiting to be downloaded, but they'll need to delete some off their phone first.

The same thing will happen to a smart phone. Now on older versions of Android this would cause a problem, as threads bigger than around 1000 messages made the Messaging app grind to a halt and it was difficult (unless you knew how - lots of solutions to this problem on this very forum) to get into the thread to delete the messages.

Newer smartphones, like my Samsung Galaxy S for example, have a maximum thread size limit, so it starts automatically deleting old messages in that thread as new ones arrive. This means it's pretty immune to this kind of attack as in fact sending more messages just makes the phone automatically delete the older ones you sent.

As I've said before in this forum thread, this kind of attack on a phone is illegal. In most countries you face permanent bans from both the network you used to send the barrage and network you attacked, large fines, or even imprisonment. It is really easy to trace too, so don't do it. If someone does it to you, report them.
