like most touchscreen phones today(or at least the good ones) use a "capacitative" screen which means they recieve input from the electric conductivity in your skin.(thats why your fingernails wont work. also why gloves dont work but if you touch it right you can use your bare knuckles)
knowing that when you touch the screen try touching with a large flat surface of your finger to get the best response out of your device...
He's said repeatedly that he has trimmed fingernails and does not use his finger-tip!
When I first got it, I was finding tapping was not enough and you really have to think about 'pressing'. There are some widgets that seem to need a tap (checkboxes and the 'x' on windows in the browsers 'view open windows' mode), and some need to be pressed with a little pressure. It might help you if you turn the audible touch option on in settings so you get a bit more feedback.
Other things such as scrolling and bringing the notification screen down rely on you lightly swiping the screen. Pressing too hard can select items in a list, I found my problems with the notification screen went away when I got used to lightly swiping the screen. Try starting the downwards swipe with your finger on the casing above the screen and you'll hit it every time.
