I just wanna add my experience to this thread for anyone that may have my issue.
Just got my Galaxy S (vibrant) 2 days ago. Everything was fine (and I love the phone) except I found I could not download any apps from market. They would begin, then just say "download unsuccessful". I took the phone into a tmobile store and they tried to reset it to factory defaults. It DID NOT work!! It said something like "clear service not available" or something like that. He even tried a hard reset (I believe you turn on the phone while holding the volumn button in) and that did not work either.
So not only could my phone not get apps but it could not reset to defaults either. He gave me a new phone which works flawlessly so it appears I may have gotten a "lemon"!
PS this phone is amazing!
I had issues with it, too. especially when upgrading to 2.2 froyo. The phone did not always perform hangup correctly. The solution to this was to perform a complete software refresh through the software suite kies from samsung. Maybe this helps in other cases. After the 2.2 update there seemed to be old settings from 2.1 that caused the strange behaviour.
