Launching maps forces an update, however it *SHOULD* periodically update without your interaction.

any update on if this is corrected in cupcake??

I like to have mine running when I am out for my bike rides.... that way when i get runned over by some redneck in a truck, at least my wife will know where to find my remains.

odd. if I remember correctly my nokia N95 would automatically update all the time.... in fact, I am looking at my mom's status (she is currently on her bike) and her N75 is updating every few minutes with a new location.

whoddathunk that nokia would do a better job with a google application then google does... ugh

edit: looks like even opening Maps won't update it. I need to manually hit "My Location" every time I want my Latitude to update. That is pretty weak.

Apologize for bumping this but is there any way to fix this? I am thinking perhaps a dev could create a forced update every XX number of minutes application?

I'm pretty sure it's designed to work that way for the sake of battery life, you can use an application like LocService to force updates on your location.

http://www.trackdroid.org is the link I believe, or just search LocService on the Market.

Keep in mind that I haven't tested it for that purpose, it could very likely react the same way and require a manual "My Location" selection from the user in order to work correctly.

Latitude does not work, and is not fixed in Cupcake. Official Google thread on this is:

    They are "working on it".

Here is a great alternative that will keep your position updated, even when the phone is put to sleep

Hah! What a failure latitude has been.

I am relieved that Google is aware of it, but what - it only took them several months to acknowledge that its useless on their own device and they still haven't fixed it? aye-yi-yi... they must have their summer intern working on it.

Months have gone by and we are still waiting for a fix. What's the point of Latitude if it doesn't update in the background?

Latitude works great on Blackberrys. Just not on Google's own OS. Crazy.

It has gotten better over the past couple of weeks. It is still severely lagging, and I am suspicious that it is really draining the battery more than it should, but still...

    I am running Maps version: 3.1.2 (#3182)

There is a new app in Android Market called Latitude Update, it lets you select how frequent you want to update your location in Google Latitude - even when Google's own app is down or fails to update. You can also get your latest location history, see it on Google Map and more ..
