Ah but games are different than utility applications like GasBot: games really don't need to talk to a central server to get data since they're pretty much self contained (for those not following because I don't want to sound condescending to a fellow developer: once you install a game, it's installed and has no reason to phone home for it to work). I wonder how Google will deter pirates in this case. Will they end up using some sort of digital key or encryption? Will pay applications require users to sign up for accounts somewhere to ensure they've been legitimately purchased? Will Google simply store this data on their end, tied to your Gmail account?
I believe the iPhone uses some sort of signed key/certificate for paid applications and that's how some h4x0r-type person released a utility to allow jailbroken iPhones to run AppStore apps without paying. Google ought to be looking at this carefully and learning from Apple's "mistakes". Locking down the phone and preventing root access certainly fits into this, even if the 'jailbreak' was really a gaping security hole in disguise.
I don't see anything obvious in the current Android API to determine whether or not an application has been purchased and I have a hard time believing Google would require applications to invent their own security to determine their legitimacy. That being said, I'm sure Google will come up with some easy solution that, hopefully, will at the very least heavily deter pirates.
Thank god i was waiting for this!!! Games in market really suck, light years behind apps in the market.
Almost the end of Jan, shouldn't be long now![]()
