Default Google Voice: Myfaves

What number do I add to myfaves, and if not, where can I find the number?

you add your personal google voice number to your my fav's. make sure you get a text saying your my favs has been updated before you start using it .. otherwise it will still charge you.

I know for sure it works for out going calls but I think their is some confusion as to if it works for incoming calls when you the callers number.

Talking Re: Google Voice: Myfaves

Hi,

Ok I have been using this method basically 1 month after I got my g1 so for about 4 months now. I would like to say that it works for both incoming and outgoing calls. Let me explain..... SO first off set your GV number in you myfaves and then you are set for outgoing calls as long as you use google voice. It is a little more complicated for incoming calls though, this is what you have to do. Log into google voice and then go to settings under the General tab locate the Caller id setting and set it as "display my google voice number" so from now on all your incoming call will just show your google voice number instead of the actual caller id. For some this is a downside because they would like to know who is calling but for me I use this for work and everytime I see my GV number calling I know it is work related. It has its ups and downs but it is worth it for me. Hope this helps!

The other one is 347-234-5001. The app GV dials out through your Google Voice number. Google Voice app dials the 347 number to initiate a session. I found this out the hard way after using a whole lot of minutes after I had installed Google Voice. I didn't know it was dialing a different number, but I added it to myFaves when I found out what was going on.

A quick heads up-now my phone is dialing a 760 number instead of the one above. For the time being I'm going back to GV from the market since is dials out through your google voice number. You have to wonder how one guy can make a better app than a whole roomful of programmers. What is Google thinking?

Can someone who has experience with both the "official" Google Voice app and the "unofficial" GV app confirm my understanding of how it works with MyFaves? Please correct me if any of the following is wrong.

When placing an outgoing call with the "official" Google Voice app:
  • a data connection is made with the Google Voice servers initiating the call (this is analogous to initiating a call through the web interface)
  • Google places an incoming call to your mobile from one of the (ever changing) access numbers: (347) 234-5001, and the new (760) number
  • When you answer the call, you are connected with the person you were dialing
  • Free with myFaves if the Google access number is one of your myFaves (e.g. (347) (760)).
When receiving an incoming call with the "official" Google Voice app:
  • Scenario #1 - You have your Google Voice "Settings -> Caller ID" set to Display caller's number:
    • Free with myFaves if the caller's number is one of your myFaves.
  • Scenario #2 - You have your Google Voice "Settings -> Caller ID" set to Display my Google number:
    • Free with myFaves if your Google Voice number is one of your myFaves.
When placing an outgoing call with the "unofficial" GV app:
  • Scenario #1 - You have your GV app "Settings -> Use callback dialing" enabled:
    • This works the same as placing an outgoing call with the "official" Google Voice app
    • Free with myFaves if the Google access number is one of your myFaves (e.g. (347) (760)).
  • Scenario #2 - You have your GV app "Settings -> Use callback dialing" disabled:
    • Your mobile places a call to your Google Voice number.
    • GV app auto-enters your PIN # (if applicable), presses #2 (place a call), enters the number to call, and presses # to place the call.
    • Free with myFaves if your Google Voice number is one of your myFaves.
When receiving an incoming call with the "unofficial" GV app:
  • This works the same as receiving an incoming call with the "official" Google Voice app.
In summary, the only current way to not use an minutes for all incoming/outgoing calls while avoiding the problem of Google changing the access number is to do the following:
  • Exclusively use the "unofficial" GV app with its "Settings -> Use callback dialing" disabled.
  • Set Google Voice's Caller ID setting to "Display my Google number."
    • Hint: enable Google Voice's Call presentation as an audible "caller id."
  • Make one of your myFaves numbers your Google Voice Number.

Correct and well recapped.
Google keeps changing the (347) and the (760) numbers. Best way to go without using your cell minutes is with the unofficial app -- GV.
