    Default Gmail Update on Android

I'm a little baffled by this situation and I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I've tried repeatedly to get Gmail to work on the default Android browser. I can't seem to access it and when it loads it usually just shows me a white page in which I can scroll around as well as zoom in and out, but it displays absolutely nothing! And the loading notification isn't visible.

It's really not that big of a deal, I plan on sticking with the default Gmail app, I was just curious about this floaty bar thing they have. Anyone have any ideas? I can load Gmail in Opera but not the updated version, and I can load any other page on the default browser including Myspace, Facebook, Okcupid, etc.

Here's another tid bit of information that might be the key to all of this. I purchased it on Ebay as an Unlocked(I'm on AT&T) G1. I suppose maybe the previous owner attempted to get root access and jailbreak the phone. My only reason for believing this might have happened is because every now and again when I attempt to access google.com or gmail.com through the default browser I get an error message. I can't seem to replicate the error but it something along the lines of gp_initSearch is not found. If I get the error again I will update this post immediately.

Thanks for the help in advance. Like I said, it's not exactly THAT important, as Gmail is the only site I'm having trouble connecting to and I already plan on continuing to use the default Gmail app.

It showed up on mine, and prompted me (after clicking the link) for Gears access. The layout is nicer (I guess, didn't use the web based Gmail much on my phone before), haven't seen or tried any new features. I guess it enables offline support for my alternate Gmail address, but I have that through K9 and IMAP.
Got a question for you, did you do a factory reset on your phone after purchasing it?

Actually, I did not factory reset the phone when I first received it. I'm not sure why I didn't do this and at this point it seems like too much of a hassle just to get access to Gmail through the browser. Especially since it's almost half way through April and we should see Cupcake soon.

I still haven't seen the error again since earlier today. I just get a white screen in the browser still though.

Soon my girlfriend will have a G1, by the weekend if I'm not mistaking. I'll have to check it out on her phone and see if it's actually worth the reset.

Oh, trust me, I'm not. I don't rush perfection, my friend. I'll leave the whining to everybody else.

You keep holding yours though, as you seem to be doing with such a response. You must be anticipating it more than I.

Personally, I'm happy with my phone and whatever Cupcake brings or doesn't bring is simply irrelevant. If anything I'll take a Java course and build my own free stuff before I start complaining about what's taking so long.

Anyway, shouldn't we be discussing the topic? You didn't even mention Gmail.

I am not waiting. I have given up on this phone. I need a phone that I can trust. The simple things do not work all the time for me. I change notification sounds, and then none play. I go from silent mode to sounds and none play. Or it takes 2 or 3 email or txts to "wake" the phone up and play the right sound. These things don't happen often, but should not at all. The camera is the worst I have seen on a phone, even with SnapPhoto Pro. I did not discuss it because the phone is so buggy I could not even hazard a guess.I am jumping ship back to ATT when the Nokia E71x starts shipping.

You haven't completely given up or you wouldn't be sitting here on Android Community dot com. At least, that's how I see it. I use Locale and it changes the phone from silent to sound based on my location. It works flawlessly too.

Maybe it's just the way you're going about things. Maybe there's a simpler way to do it. You can't generalize on Android because you've had one bad experience. Maybe it's your phone, maybe it's your service. Who knows.

My phone has only a few errors, and I expect them to be cleaned up. Unlike the rest of us, I'm sure Google is doing what they can do. Open Source is definitely the way to go if you want to get ahead of anything. At least Google Android is building stuff WITH us, and not building stuff FOR us.

Have with your Nokia E71x and your sick ass camera.
Phones are phones, you're simply being too greedy with the camera deal.

Personally, I don't mind carrying a phone in my pocket and carrying a real camera in my hand. Afterall, if I ever need a non gphone quality picture then that's probably the only time I will have my actual camera. I plan for the future.

I have given up on the phone, but I am still here because I don't have a new one yet, and will provide help when I see a post I can assist someone with. No phone is perfect, but I have never had such issues with any Nokia phone. Phones are not phones, when I pay a lot of money for something I expect things to work better than they have with this phone. Its as simple as that. I am not doing anything wrong. I am non-rooted, and if the phone can't make a simple notification sound change, or send txt messages on a regular basis, then it is flawed. I have had my G1 since the day they offered them to the public, not including the Pre-sales, becasue I was not a current T-mobile customer. There has not been a day that everything worked as it should, and that is unusual. My wife has the same problems, and it is simply not worth it. Time to cut our losses. Enjoy your phone, I hope it continues to work well for you.

Shocking, I've never heard of bugs being introduced into a first gen phone that's running a first gen OS... ever.

Almost 95% of peoples problem with the phone are due to what they install and what they don't know about. A lot of users expect things to install and just work. There's a reason Apple doesn't allow for background apps like Android does, and it's to ensure things always work as expected (Android puts a lot of trust into the developers hands, and I hate to say it but most apps are poorly written or don't follow standards). As far as a camera is concerned -- yeah it sucks, but it's a phone that wasn't exactly promoting its photo taking abilities. Wait for a better version of the phone comes out with a higher MP camera and flash.

As far as your text/email problems, it sounds like you have an app installed which is not releasing its context on the broadcast receiver. Have you ever tried a full wipe of the phone and trying again without any apps installed from the market (I'm talking a full reflash)?

On the topic of Symbian and Nokia -- Symbian's had so many refinements and generations that it's impossible to compare to a brand new/young Android OS. If you like Symbian, then switch to a Nokia, no one's really holding you down. I like both equally, and have created Symbian/Maemo apps before as well.
