Thread: functionality similar to locale?

    Default functionality similar to locale?

Just wondering if there were any other apps similar to the functions of locale? I just can't justify the $10 price tag after the beta ended.

On top of the astronomical $10 price tag, they stripped functionality and make them into a bunch of BS "add-ons" that you have to purchase to make it full-featured. wish there was some other alternative that was cheaper/free

Yeah - their approach was pretty cynical. I purchased 2 add-ons for the beta which I am now prevented from using. Whilst I appreciate that the developers are at liberty to change to a paid model, I feel that their handling of the migration was pretty poor - releasing an 'update' which introduced an end-of-life check and caused it to stop working, without warning us that this was what they were doing was really low.

    I have been investigating 'Tasker' - http://tasker.dinglisch.net/index.html

It is strives to do similar things to Locale, but is far less user-friendly. Locale does some things that Tasker does not (turn synchronization on/off) and Tasker does many things that Locale does not (revert a setting once a condition/context is left and many others).

I've been noticing that when Tasker is running my phone slows considerably, so that is not great, but it is very beta and not even on the market yet.

Agh. Bummer. I just want to simply be able to turn off/on vibrate or silent based on my location. Other functions are nice, but are not necessary for me.

I've been using Setting Profiles for about a week now.
    http://www.probeez.com/?p=11

It was $2.95 and has most of what Locale and it's plugins have.

The two things I like most so far:
running an app based on a rule (which I use to kick off Pandora as my morning alarm)
calendar based rules (which I use to turn off sounds and vibration for meetings)

Nice. Thanks for the suggestion, I may have to try that app out!

Spot on. Just bought full version - played with Lite version and it was immediately clear that this (A) cheaper than Locale (B) better than Locale and even comes with a free widget!

No default settings - reverts to previous settings after exiting a profile
Widget to manually control profile selection
No paid-for plugins - you get everything in one app
Active and responsive comments page which puts you in touch with developer

    Beat that

I just did the same. The interface isn't as intuitive, but 10 minutes of fiddling and I have profiles set up for home plugged in, home unplugged, sleep, and work. Very nice.
