Oh noez! Not 8MB!
Just do a factory reset and re-download all the apps you have currently. That way it'll clear out a lot of space.
Everytime you use the market it eats memory, even just looking at an application.
Hey, if I deleted the market from my phone, would I be able to download the apps I want directly from the web? I am done with all the ridiculous apps showing up in the market, and it constantly growing in size - eating memory. It's up to 8M!! I prefer to just download those that I want, and not have to even see the rest. Is this possible you think?![]()

i imagine that even if you delete it, a subsequent system update would restore it

I'm not even sure you can delete the App Store without a major root level hack. Im sure someone will do it eventually, but I don't think it can be done yet.
FYI, you cannot uninstall the Android Market. Not everything under Manage Applications can be uninstalled. Mine is up to 10 MB. There's nothing you can do about it, literally. You can't even clear the cache data for it.
