no one can explain the difference in these apps for me?
is there such a thing? not skype, or truphone or sipdroid. but is there an app that allows you to have voice calls that won't, will not use your minutes while app is running? since we have unlimited data this would be great.
also can someone explain to me the differences between the 3 apps i mentioned above? don't they all do the same exact thing?
thanks

I use sipdroid. The calls are crystal clear over a 3G network, likewise with a WLAN connection. The best part about sipdroid is that it integrates into your phone. You simply use your contacts apps just as if you were making a call over a cellular network. It's really an amazing app.
There are a tonne of SIP providers out there. http://acanac.ca give you a telephone number and unllimited North American calling for only $10/ month CAD. I myself use http://smsdiscount.com to make calls, as it's less than a penny to make a long distance call; I don't use my phone enough to justify an unlimited plan.
The only catch with sipdroid is that you have to use http://pbxes.org to tunnel your VOIP calls. The service is free, but the set-up is a bit tricky. In the instructions below I'll use smsdiscount.com as an example.
1) create a smsdiscount.com account (pay first before calling or most of the payment options will disappear)
2) set-up pbxes.org
3) add a new extension, only add your name, extension (100) and password
4) add a trunk, just enter a trunk name, your calleasy username, password and server (sip.poivy.com)
5) add an outbound route, just enter a route name, select your trunk and enter your extension
6) download sipdroid - http://code.google.com/p/sipdroid/downloads/list (the Market version doesn't have 3G SIP calling enabled)
7) in sipdroid enter your pbxes.org login name with your extension as your username (e.g. - shamefulzero-100)
8) in sipdroid enter your pbxes.org password
9) in sipdroid enter pbxes.org as the server
10) enable WLAN or 3G calling in settings
What if I were to use gizmo5, with pbxes.com and sipdroid?
I can't find something specific for getting it to work correctly.
I use my office's SIP with SIPDroid and it works just fine. I am always to make calls over wifi or 3g with my office number. I should accept that the quality is not that good though. It doesn't eat any airtime minutes from your mobile plan.
Thanks for the great instructions on getting SIPdroid to work with pxbex.org I had trouble there before. Will try it again.
But more importantly, my office has an IP Phone system which I can use SIP Phones on (including the Iphone with a SIP Client) I am however unsure as to how I can use SIPdroid on the system as there is no public IP address...initially I would want to just get it to work within the office using Wifi but cant seem to do so as I have to go through PBXes, any way to bypass this? Are there alternate SIP Clients for Android that would do this better?
Thanks for any help.
Or buy a 3 pay as you go phone and get unlimited Skype for life...
On my pc I use Skype out of the box - added credit for skype-out to make voice calls to landlines. What's the problem with smart phones? No Android Skype app. Can't setup "Fring" app for Skype.com.
Can I use Fring with SMSdiscount.com? Don't see any SIP service, whatever that is, but appears to be similar to Skype. What does pbxes.org add to the mix and what on earth is tunneling?
i've been looking for a reliable app to make calls over wlan, i'll have to check out sipdroid. i dunno if anyone else had a similar experience but i downloaded and installed fring and just found it to be a pain in the ass to use. never bothered putting in too much time with it because i was so unimpressed... would be nice to ditch the home phone long distance calling plan.

I think Google Voice will let you call completely free...maybe need to pair it with Gizmo first.
