I just tried this successfully with my Motorola Defy and laptop running Fedora 16. I didn't install the whole Android SDK and assorted dependencies, I simply used the Fedora "Add/Remove Software" tool and searched for "android". This turned up the "Android Platform Tools" sourced from the Fedora Updates repo. Installing it this way means you have direct access to the adb command from the shell without having to locate it.

If you are using Ubuntu then try launching Synaptic and searching for "android" or similar and I expect you'll turn up the same package for your version of Ubuntu.

This method is a bit clunky but it does work, I'd be interested if the OP has refined it at all.
Thanks for encouraging me to try some more. I finally got complete success better than I expected! I'm using PCLINUXOS-GNOME in my desktop and I have been for about 4 years. I really don't know why I'd had trouble figuring out where platform-tools>adb had gone to on my system. It was in the original folder I installed from and I either overlooked it or it was hidden (that's my story , yada, yada...) and as soon as I found it I used a terminal to cd into the directory and run the command and I also set my 8080 manual proxy in Firefox. I wasn't overly happy yet since I couldn't yet use T-bird for my mail. But at least I was connected through FF in spite of my system showing no connection. Then a friend called me which bumped me offline. I reset my phone to usb tethering as it had kicked into htc sync mode. How to reconnect...? I was thinking I'd have to run the adb command again but instead I looked again at network setup and I saw that a "usb" option had been added to the list of wired connections. I configured this for auto DNS , blah blah and OK'ed everything and selected to "Connect now". I tried a link in FF and nothing. Went back into FF Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Settings and I changed the Proxy back to "use system proxy settings". Now I am happy! Thunderbird's working and I'm firewalled. Speedtest wasn't bad either. I'll see if I'll be able to have this already running on reboot or if I'll have to rerun the adb command again in which case I may have to come up with a simple script. Hopefully since I've configured it in the system now, it'll just start every time I connect the phone.

Just a quick followup - I unplugged my phone (EVO 4G w/Team Nocturnal Stock RLS.05 ROM) and put my PCLOS machine to sleep. I restarted the machine and plugged in my phone and selected USB tethering. It connected again right away. It's a good day till something breaks!

    [Edit:
It also started fine after a cold boot. It seems all I really needed to do was start the adb forward command to get the daemon running and go through the quick usb wired connection routine in network configuration. That connection then named itself HTC Android Phone.]

At the risk of being contrary to the title of the thread and the OP instructions, I had a hunch I didn't need Proxoid at all so I uninstalled it. Just make sure you have USB Debugging turned on in Settings>Applications>Development. As I said before, I didn't need the changed settings in Firefox either. For an ADB command, just try "adb devices" and you should see your phone identified and the daemon started. Once you see the option in your network manager (whatever it's called in your distro) and usb0 is listed with other wired connections, you should be able to click through that config setup and not have to look at it or run any command again. That's my experience up to now anyway. BTW, if you didn't notice, when you plug in your phone and switch from htc sync to usb tethering it doesn't take effect till you press "Done". Your experience might not be the same as mine especially if your phone is not rooted.
