There was a time (got laid off/bored) that I got TOTALLY frustrated as I spent DAYS getting EVERY piece of album art for every song that I had on my 8GB card... My theory is that something interrupted the process where it's converting the embedded MP3 album art into the files in \sdcard\albumthumbs, most likely by playing a song before the process is done. Trust me when I say I tried EVERYTHING... batch resizing the album art to 200x200 pixels @ 72dpi (6-8 step process that still took a while with MP3Tag and FastStone Photo Resizer), re-encoded the song to either a lower bitrate or different encoder (e.g. from FhG to LAME), and so on.
1. MAKE SURE that your music is in \sdcard\Music; for some reason it won't work as well in other folders.
2. It's preferable to scroll to a song that you can do without, but if not, whichever song you find (but it might be an extra step if you still want it)... You're going to have to delete it (not NOW, but step 5). Queue that song (e.g. play it and pause).
3. Go into Settings, force close Music and clear the data.
4. Enable Airplane mode; you don't want to risk the chances of someone calling you and potentially interrupting TEH SCIENCE!!!11!!1!
4. Connect your phone via USB, then mount your phone to the computer.
5. Delete the song from your SD card through your music manager (e.g. MediaMonkey or Winamp in Windows) or file browser (e.g. My Computer in Windows), unmount it, and launch Music. By now, "Now Playing" should be empty or not show up (depending on which build/version of Android you have). DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE.
6. Force close and clear Music again, then reconnect it to your computer.
7. Delete the entire \sdcard\albumthumbs folder.
8. Disconnect from computer. It is advised to put it in the charger. Launch Music, exit back out to the home screen with the Back button, and DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR (or my estimates: 5 seconds for every song you have)!! (I was actually charging it, so that's how I discovered that it worked).
9. BEFORE PLAYING ANY MUSIC, open the "Albums" section and scroll through it IN ITS ENTIRETY just to be safe; you'll notice some albums might still be gray, but 9 times out of 10 it'll load in 3-4 seconds. If not, open a media player (NOT Windows Media Player; that stores album art in a hidden file in the folder and DOES NOT embed it! Try Winamp or iTunes!)that supports album art and try opening the MP3 file in your computer. If the album art doesn't load in your computer, chances are it won't work in Android. If it works in your computer, try re-ripping/or re-encoding the MP3; there might either be something wrong with the file (e.g. it sat on a bad sector) or something hiccuped in the encoding process and Android is being a bit fussy about it (which chances are it might even force close the music player if you try to play it).
10. If all the desired album art is working, NOW you may push the play button and enjoy your colorful music! If not, try fixing the file, repeat steps 6-9 with those individual files and try again.
