    Default AIM via EDGE/GPRS

I know AIM is built into the phone, but from what I've read, its SMS based.

I've also read people saying "I'm sure there will be an AIM app developed soon that works over 3G"

My problem is that I don't live in a 3G market. So I was wondering if the same 3G app would work over EDGE/GPRS, or if there was any word on an AIM app being released that WOULD work over EDGE/GPRS

    Thanks a ton!

It's pretty hard to know for sure right now. It really depends on how the developer designs the 3rd party IM client. I currently use the iPhone over T-Mobile's EDGE service, and have difficulty connecting to certain IM clients. We will just have to wait and see, but the good news is that T-Mobile will be expanding the 3g service areas exponentially by the end the year. I'd just buy the phone and hope for the best .

Oh I've already pre-ordered my G1. AIM access is nowhere near a deal-breaker for me. And as for the 3G markets expanding, I wouldn't hold my breath for my area to get it for a long long time.

AT&T doesn't cover my area yet, either, and I'm sure that T-Mobile's plan will follow the same path of coverage... not because T-Mobile should copy AT&T in any way, but just because the order cities that would use the 3G access the most is probably about the same as how AT&T is spreading theirs.

I'm not really sure you have the facts quite right, but then again I could be wrong. THe google talk app for the G1 will work "like" sms, but runs over the 3G network. You will get notifications, just like you will with an SMS because the google talk application will be running at all times, just like gmail and your calendar. I don't believe that it will be using you monthly sms allotments for any messages you send. Also, anything that works over 3G will work over EDGE as well, just slower.
