So I'm assuming the GPS (wireless) figures out your position via triangulation of your cell phone signal but what is plain GPS? In the Toggle settings app there are two options (GPS & GPS wireless). When I've got plain GPS on it never seems to find my location, it always says it can't find my location but if I turn on GPS (wireless) it can. What's the diff?

The G1 has something called AGPS. That's kind of a combination of wireless/cell technology and old school GPS tech. The combination of options just means your G1 will update your location faster, and are especially essential for finding you the first time in less than 15 minutes, but will drain your battery faster when used together. I usually just keep wireless source on unless I'm trying to drive somewhere I've never been.

In English:
Wireless will use the tower to easily triangulate your position and GPS will pinpoint it. So if you are initializing the app (or finding My Location on Maps for instance), then start with Wireless and fine-tune the location with GPS... You can then turn off "Wireless GPS" once your location has been found. It is easier to find your location that way, since it gives the app a starting point instead of going through all other locations... ... just saying... Last edited by dkvitus; 12-16-2008 at 03:51 PM. The first time I tried it was a couple blocks off... but after that, I turned on wireless then GPS and off course turned off wireless... All in all, it's been great, I even use it to find directions.
All I need is: 1- Text To Speech incorporated so I can get turn by turn directions 2- Street View in Honolulu so I can virtually go to the beach...hahaha Hope u r enjoying your street view and 3G, Hawaii is not even on the 3rd waiting list for 3G or Street View... Grrrrrrrr |
