...has the G1 become the new sidekick 2/3/LX of what it used to be years ago when sk's were hot $hit accessory to have?

cuz i've seen a lot of hardcore sk 3/LX users switching and/or wanting the G1 lately.

i came from a sidekick lx and the reason why i switched was because in comparison, the sidekick is like a kids toy phone hahahaha and also i wanted a touchscreen with a physical kb and real working email :) now only if i had root hehe

I don't know; I never had a Sidekick. The G1 is my first smart phone.

I wanted it mostly because it syncs with Google. I've held off on smart phones because I don't like synchronization hassles; I deal with them as a software engineer and I'd rather not hassle with them on my phone. :)

From the sidekick family I have had...

B/W sidekick
Color sidekick
Sidekick II
Sidekick 3
Sidekick LX

among alot of other phones...

Tmobile MDA (Wizard)
iPhone 2G
Tmobile dash
Tmobile Wing
...and lol someone gifted me a chinese N95 clone (I used it for one day...just cuz we went out that night and I wanted them to see I was using it)

and now my G1...I think the reason you see alot of ex-SK users adopting the G1 is because of the 5 row keyboard...they are the only 2 phones that I know of that have that.

I personally used to love the feel of my sidekicks...but the market was (is) a complete joke

Although the sidekick is more of a feature phone than a smart phone...it was very easy to sync as well...everything was backed up just like the G1 is...1 plus is that the intellisync worked great with Outlook...come on google

Well, I'm a Linux user, so as you can imagine, I didn't really want to bother with figuring out syncing. :)

Ahhh...I hear that it works with thunderbird as well...but good luck trying to get it to mount in the first place...never tried on my Ubuntu machine as most of my contacts are on my wife and I's shared XP machine.

ding ding ding! the dedicated row of numbers is one of the best features on the sidekick and now the G1. ive owned all of the sidekicks starting with the sk2, and the switch to the G1 is a decision i dont regret at all! the sk market was a joke.

I started with a nokia 5190, then dove into the internet/"smart" phone world with the first black and white sidekick. Something like this:
nokia5190 -> b&w sidekick -> color sidekick (csk) -> sidekick 2 -> sidekick 3 -> ppc 6800 (hated it) -> treo 650 (os sucked) -> sidekick LX -> iphone -> iphone 3g -> G1 :D

Man, I loved the sidekicks - they were like macs in the sense that they got out of your way, and let you do what you were trying to do. No matter where I was or what I was doing, data was a screen-flip away. In one motion, I'd have the SK out of my pocket, screen flipped open while bringing it up, menu+shortcut key to jump to the app, and by the time it was at face-level, I was in my app doing what I needed.

As the rest of the phone world matured though, the sidekick fell behind pretty quickly - its "tried and true" formula held on for a while, but eventually lost the war.

When I went back to the G1, it felt like I finally had the sidekick "that should have been". The sidekick with a touch screen, wifi, 3g, and a real OS. The sidekick OS wasn't bad, but... it wasn't very flexible at all. AIM/IM and multitasking was dead reliable, though.

The biggest thing I missed while I had the iphone though, was the qwerty keyboard (and multitasking). The G1 fixes everything. :)

The bad thing - is that a lot of the young ghetto sidekick fans are now on the G1, and are flooding the market with idiotic comments. Ugh. I hope this doesn't scare off developers into writing more "mature/sophisticated" apps for the iphone, and leaving the g1 market with myspace profile viewers and lil' wayne ringtones..

You have to remember that android is an OS and not a phone though...so, even though the G1 may attract the ghetto sidekick fans...Once Android starts being loaded onto more devices, it should once again level the playing field for developers (maybe they will just block G1 users from posting comments :D

P.S. - I am not calling anyone here ghetto (as I am a previous sidekick fan turned G1 user as well) but I do agree that there are a lot of immature users for this device (the comments in the market place are my proof)

I went from a Blackberry Pearl to a Sidekick Slide. I learned soon that, in my opinion, the Sidekick was a toy. I held out for the G1 and I love it. It has the functionality that I was missing during my brief time with the Sidekick. I still feel a bit of pain like some others here do though, as I see some of the Sidekick users have trickled over and plastered the market with useless comments. Sometimes I even think my G1 cries a little bit.
