Thanks for posting this! I'm having the same problem and just came on here to post about it myself.
Someone texted me and asked "who is this?" and I was like "You texted me, who are you?" and they told me that I sent them a picture of a snowman???
edit: I should also add that the apparent "snowman" message sent from my number is NOT in my outbox and my phone has been with me all day so I know that none of my friends grabbed my phone and sent a random text to mess with me

yea man. Its kinda wigging me out.
I wonder if its a recently installed app or something...?
Makes me think twice about the security of this phone.

lol that's some freaky azz sh!t...
I would save their numbers and send it straight to voicemail in case they'd ever call again.
But my first option would be call T-Mobile to have them block it. Say they are harrassing you.
Still freaky but yeah probably your number is on a wall. Shiz never happened to me. So freaky!

Yea, I just installed chompsms the other day, savemms, and scoreboard. I highly doubt scoreboard causing it, but I'm concerned about chompsms, which would suck because its an amazing text app.

IDK if it's the meetme app.... I doubt it...
It has to be an app that can take control of your phone.
Whenever you download an app you give it permission to do certain things.
whether it's viewing your contacts, or not letting your light turn off... or even
An alternate dialer??? Txt apps? CHOMP? it could go on and on.
my other theory is maybe it has something to do with a family plan going outta wackk.
The only way we would know is if you guys list what apps you have in common etc....
I'm just praying that it doesn't happen to me
IceDroid

After that last "Hey Sexy I like it" message I had enough and called t-mobile and told them what was going on. They "reset the network" or whatever they call it and also had me master reset my phone... A little upset about that but whatever all my info was backed up.
Hopefully this *beep* will stop.

Hey I just joined the forums because this is happening to me as well. I keep getting messages from people asking me who I am then when I finally replied to one of them they said that I was sending them pictures of santa doing nasty things. I checked online and found that many websites allow you to send fake text messages to people using someone elses number, but I think now seeing that many g1 users are expereinceing the same thing that it may very well be an application doing it. the only app that i have that is any thing close to having access to my text messages is PF voice mail (which I am removing right now to be safe) does any one else who is expeirencing this problem have the PF voice mail app?

I'm guessing it's MeetMe. It is, after all, a social 'networking' app that allows people around you to contact you and vice versa. That said, if you look like the person on the right in your avatar, I wouldn't be surprised if people are trying to contact you :D

Whoa...I thought it was only me.
I do not have the meetme app on my phone though...Im married, come to think of it...I do not have any of the apps you guys have mentioned.
I was recieving texts from a VA number...it was just the "hows it going" kind of stuff, I asked who it was and she said her name was Cassie, I simply told her she has the wrong number and she apologized...but I continue to receive a text from the same number about 2-3 times a week. The last time which was yesterday, I simply told her that She has the wrong number and that she needs to delete me from her phonebook because I dont know her and dont care to really.

i don't have meetme, and i've received the who is this message.
also after getting the phone i got some calls for renewing my car insurance (i don't own a car) and for a home security system (i don't own a car either) both had remove # options and i did i no longer recieve those calls. then i started getting texts for getting advances on my paycheck (my brother also received these, he's a 11 with a cheap flip phone and a prepaid plan, so thats not g1 specific) then the above mentioned text.
my theory is some app, early in the release is selling information or t-mobile actually has a larger problem then just the g1.
so any ideas now?

I got the same kind of message the other day, asking who I was and that I sent them a message of my purse.... I didn't think anything of it.
Then, last night I sent a few pictures to my friend and 2 of them they received said they came from different numbers... one with a ny area code and one with an Indiana area code. I texted them both and the NY area code number doesn't know me and has never been to Atlanta...
So I dunno whats going on with all this
I do have here are the applications I have:
Force Ring, sketch-a-etch, shop savvy, my maps editor, polyglotz, astro, my backup, locale, missed call, toggle settings, save mms, statusinator, handstand, stream furious, snap photo, night clock, barternder, tunes for android, phone plus callback, musical, hello aim, ak notepad, weather channel, toddler lock, tune wiki, imeem music, tub thumper, and bank book, star contact, droidsans tweak, flashlight, fbook, g-sunlight, anycut, radar, ringroid, video player, and shazam...
I had chomp sms but deleted it the other day, and I do NOT have meet me...
I got a text today from someone asking who I am and why I sent a forward, when I didn't send anything.

I just had this issue last night. I called T-Mobile about it. My picture messages were showing up as a Washington DC number on the phones that I sent the picture message to. She fixed it by removing MMS from my account, then re-adding it, and that fixed it. They were quick to resolve it after they brought up the account for the number it said it was coming from. That, rushing to fix it came after a very shocked "Oh my God" from the T-Mobile rep. Apparently, the number that was showing up belonged to someone of recognizable importance in DC.

I'll be looking out for the SS :) and just for clarification, this happened on a new phone with no market apps installed. Tech support had me turn the phone off, then she removed MMS from the account, put it back on, then turned the phone back on. Once it reregistered with the network with the new MMS account, it worked fine.
i'm really upset. i just had to change my phone number because of this.

i have found if you do some home work that a person that gets random texts from you even though it did not come from you have another person in their contacts that has a g1...if u get a random message from some one it did not come from them it came from some in their contacts that had a g1. What I havent figured out is what apps those people had in common. I have been documenting my conversations so I can keep it all straight... in theory only a few people needed the meetme or similar app...because meetme or aprogram that has access to your phone state and contacts could make messages appear from anywhere... it is my theory that this all happened as a sort of test by a company as a new way to spam....
I uninstalled the MeetMe app then did a factory reset, then had to change my number. I called T-mobile and they didn't seem to know what I was talking about.

This has nothing to do with any app. If you go to the TMo forums, you'll see many people are having problems having their MMS messages rerouted and delivered via random numbers. Changing your number is not the solution either. TMo and Google need to fix the problem

So the problem is with the G1 right?
Don't you find it interesting the problem is with a phone that uses apps that have access to sensitive information about their owners.......?

I've gone back and looked through my phone and realized that before, I did not have this problem. The rerouting problem started when I went to Cincinnati for the Holidays, where they do not have the 3G network yet. This might be a clue to what is going on. I doubt it's an app bc I did not download any extra apps before going on my trip

While on business in Atlanta I received three picture messages. Total strangers. I deleted them. Next day started getting calls from 417, 772 and even 000 area codes. I spoke with T-mobile and they had not a clue what could cause the problem.
I stay away from social apps because of my rampant paranoia so I can't attribute the cause to an app but with the billions of phone numbers flying around the world the act of hitchiing a ride on my number seems possible. I don't know have you received any messages from my phone?

I have had this problem happen to me three times already, but guys, it's not MeetMe, it's not ChompSMS, it's not Scoreboard... It's not even an application on your phone!
Think about it. Person A (G1 owner) sent person B an MMS and it looked as if it came from my number. Now, how is my physical phone (or the software installed on it) involved in this at all? Obviously, my applications did not cause this. I also talked to the lady who sent the message and she has never installed anything on her G1. She doesn't even know what Market is.
This is a T-Mobile problem, most likely in their MMS messaging center software. You all need to call T-Mobile (611) and complain and let T-Mobile see they have a huge liability on their hands, since people you did not mean to reply to (you knew that message came from your friend, so you just replied) may be receiving personal information that cannot be shared with just anyone. This could lead to a law suit. They must understand this so that they get as many resources as possible to research, find and correct.

It's not meet me, I don't have it, and I got the same text.
I do in the other hand have chompsms.
My message was quite different, this guy and I recieved the same message saying "Thought you might want to see my little one"
and then i asked him who he was, why he texted me.. he said "I was going to ask you that, I got a picture of your kid"
(I don't have kids lol)
so yeah, it only happened once, but was weird.

Unfortunately this won't fix a thing considering the tons of spoofing utilities on the internet. Blaming it on the android software is worthless, since this has happened with many other phones as well. It's not just a G1//Android//Tmo problem.

Lady A sent lady B an MMS and it came from my number. I spoke with both of them and lady A did mean to send lady B that message (they are friends) and did it using the native Messaging app. There is no spoofing going on here. This is indeed a T-Mobile problem and it clearly seems to be specific to the 3G network or, specifically, the way MMS's are handled for the G1 (different messaging center from the rest of the phones?). Check out the official T-Mobile forums and you will see what I mean.

Yay 60 replys, 7 pages and still no one has figured anything out.
Its exactly the same thing as:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f23/andoid-market-may-have-malicious-app-9678/
So far we know:
1) Some people own Android phones
2) Some people get txt's to there phones and there friends phones
Now using all that vast information above im sure people are just diving in and figuring out whats up.
How many pointless pages do you think it will take to figure out why averad is so lame...
Averad do you wake up hoping to get an e-mail form the AC staff asking you to be a MOD...?

Here it is folks. I have a theory. I can't prove it. But it is worth discussing. We aren't wasting paper here. This is what the forum is for. If you don't like my theory then prove it WRONG. until then chillax. This can be entertaining as well....
BTW i have yet to get a response from the meetme people responding to my questions about the app stealing and misusing contact info. Also haven't got a response from them about making sure they delete my profile from their server.
Maybe I should just start a "Birdman has it out for MeetMe" thread what you guys think?

If you don't like my theory then prove it WRONG.
This obviously means this lady that originated the "bad" message did not have and never had MeetMe either.
Enough of a proof?

T-Mobile does not have an official position on this yet. From their official forums:
"This is a strange issue, and we need to get to the bottom of it. However, we still need your help. Daryl and your other moderators are monitoring this thread, for sure. However, we are not the ones who will fix this issue for you. It will be our engineers. They are aware of some customers having this problem, and they are requesting information from you, our customers."

hah , so i just found this thread after reading about the problem on another forum!!
few weeks ago i got a txt from a 347 area code sayin like "damn, i wanna c a front one now"
i wrote back "who is this?"
and i get a reply of "U sent me 2 pics already now u r asking me"
i wrote back "i haven't sent anything, u sure u have the right number?"
to which i get a reply of "of course, whats your name?"
I ended it right there, i wasn't going to tell some stranger my name....but then the next day i get a MMS from the same number of girl showin her ass off.
Haven't called t-mo yet since i haven't had any more random txts...
i'm damn curious though to know whats causing it

Have had my G1 for a couple of weeks, have not had this problem. However, I have never used 3G (no reception & therefore, shut off), and though I see people having this issue on Edge, is it possible that using 3G a few times is enough to "set you up" for this to happen even when you quit using 3G? Anyone out there who has NEVER used 3G and has the problem? Just a thought.

From the T-mo site
Hey all!
I have an update on this MMS (picture messaging) issue:
T-Mobile engineers have identified the problem causing recipients of MMS messages sent from G1 devices to see the wrong number on messages they receive.
There is currently no estimate of how much longer it will take for a fix to be applied. Now that the problem has been identified, we hope it won't be too much longer.
Thanks to everybody who provided information here, and to those who took the time to call in and have trouble tickets created to provide info for our engineers. Our engineers now have all the examples they require. There is no need to call in about this anymore. We will post another update once we have more information.
On another note, there is a separate issue in which text messages (sms) sent from the G1 are being misdirected, or G1 owners are receiving calls or texts from strangers asking why the G1 owner texted the stranger, when the G1 owner did not text the stranger. This issue, although similar, is believed to be separate from the MMS issue above. Our engineers are still looking for examples of the SMS issue. If you are experiencing this problem with text messages, please contact us (http://www.t-mobile.com/Contact.aspx), and ask to speak with PDA support. Pda support will do some troubleshooting and possibly send an update to your phone. If the update and troubleshooting does not fix the issue, then a trouble ticket may be required to get info about your problem over to our engineers.

Hahaha so my theory still hasn't been disproved. T-Mo doesn't know why it's happening! I once again submit that people with this problem had their own phone numbers and possibly the numbers in their contacts stolen.(certain apps in the market have access to your phone number and contacts) Even if you did not download the app that has access to your phone number. If you were in the contact list of a user that downloaded and used a program that had access to their contact list then your number could be used by "spoofing" software which could route picture messages that appeared to come from numbers (like yours) that they did not come from. This would/could explain what is going on in the above excerpt of scrannel's post.
My really insano theory is that this was a test of a new kind of spamming software.
I further submit, (haha I have almost no evidence, except something I am working on which is not ready...) that the "MeetMe" app is responsible. I say this because my picture messaging problems and the problems of a few others arose at the time I/we installed the "MeetMe" app.(this could be a coincidence)
I have e-mailed the company twice with these claims that they released a malicious app. I also asked that they delete my personal information from their servers that remained after I uninstalled the app. I have recieved no reply from the company.
MeetMe was released by Stylem Media. www.stylem.com (http://www.stylem.com) (notice that "MeetMe" is not listed on this site....)
Stylem is owned by this sketchball company http://x92.net (http://x92.net/)

I heard something of the issue but never read into it until it happened to me today.
This morning I get a message from a 619 number asking "wtf does that mean?" So either (a) an sms or mms I sent went to their number (without theirs appearing in my outgoing logs on MyTMo.com, or (b) my number appeared as the "from" when theu received someone else's message.
I guess there are a couple issues like this with G1 owners. I also experienced the other one twice last night. This is where someone receives my mms with a different number showing up (a 203 number in this case) as what it was sent from rather than my own.
So if the two are related, I take it that it is a problem within tmobile's mmsc.
Hopefully it's option B, I really wouldn't like my Friday night messages getting diverted to strangers.
PS and I have never installed this "MeetMe" app, so I doubt it is that.
Not using ChompSMS, either. Did have the visual voicemail but that was like 3 wipes ago and never reinstalled.

HAHA so i had this happen to me over the last two days, the first person i figured was a friend messing with me, so i was messing with her for like an hour over texts.....only to find out it was some random 14 year old girl in Texas!
HAHA AWKWARD! then i got a call from some old chick saying i sent her a picture of shoes, that's when i realized that something was up.

This started with me last night, was texting with a friend and then he started getting random texts from someone who seemed to be 'listening' in on us. Called TMO and they were cluless. Glad its not just me...but yea in the meantime keep an eye out and watchout...if this is possible then hacking would be a sinch.

Thsi, from the TMo forum:
"Engineering seems confident that the issue is with one of their vendors, and I have now heard that from multiple sources which is nice to hear considering up til this weekend, you could not get the same answer twice. Heck, they wouldn't even admit to a problem for a week or so there."
They're saying it can't be an app (such as meetme) because all the numbers involved are ALL TMo. Is that true?

Vendors are suppliers. In this case, T-Mobile's vendors would be those who provide the infrastructure and related services for their network -- Third party data centers, for instance.

I got two of these today, with apparently three numbers "I" sent to total (one in Texas, two in New Jersey, although they were different area codes; I'm in Philadelphia)
It happened a few hours after I restarted my phone because I hadn't been getting service all day.
I see this has been going on for a while. Is there a known source yet?
