Hello everyone. I just got my Android a few days ago and I'm COMPLETELY blown away by it. I learn and\or discover something new every ten min.
I have a couple app ideas to try to cut my teeth on but I'm not completely sure of their viability or difficulty.
1) A garage door opener app. Pretty straight forward. I don't know if the phone is capable of transmitting the right type of signal though. This one should be pretty simple if it's possible.
2) An alternate keyboard app for texting. I love the way the texts are handled on here but I wish I didn't have to open the keyboard and use 2 hands to send a message. It'd be awesome to hit a button on screen that brings up a medium sized standard 12 key on screen that uses a standard t9 dictionary. I don't know if something like this is out already or if it'd even be possible...let alone a good project for a beginner like myself.
Any thoughts?

I have heard speculation about a garage door opening app but never seen anybody say it works or if there is one..on the other hand for a virtual keyboard with t9..i think everybody is hoping for this update in "cupcake" but chomps sms which is avalible in the market does a very good job of giving us an iphone like keyboard which works the best out of all the Vk's so far

Awesome. I'll check out that vk app.
So...I guess the garage door opener idea isn't too bad of an idea. I'll start digging up some info on the subject and I'll try to give it a shot.

And...I just read about the cupcake update for the first time and, if what they say about the addition od a2dp stereo BT and a VK is true, that update will make this thing perfect...lol

I'm sitting here reading this month's issue of Automobile magazine and stumble across their "gear" section where they're talking about automotive related apps for the iphone. A couple cought my eye and I was wondering if there was anything similar for the G1:
Dynolicious: Uses the phone's accelerometers to measure your car's performance. Sure, it's probably not very accurate but it still seems fun and, if the phone's gps could be incorporated, it could be quite accurate. The pros (car and driver...road and track...etc) use gps technology to get their stats for their car tests. Could be very cool.
Car Care: Provides maintenance reminders and tracks fuel consumption and the like. Could be kinda handy.

I think GasBot should make the second one. He can call in MaintenanceBot for reminders and have a the ability to keep track of service and maintenance performed for resale and warranty info.
I'd download it.:D

So, I did some digging around regarding my idea for a garage door opener app. Garage door opener remotes send out signals in the 300mHz range (some as low as ~50mHz up to almost 400mHz more specifically). So now I need to know one simple thing...is the G1 hardware capable of sending a radio signal in these frequencies? If so, I could possibly make an app that will open your car as well since, come to find out, keyless entry remotes and garage door opener remotes work in similar ways.

Well welcome to Android.
It seems like this is the right phone for you.
Your mind is already opening up to other possiblities

My car door opener broke (due to being run over) and I went to the mechanic I normally go to and they wanted a fortune for a new one. So if someone could make one for my G1 I would greatly appreciate it.

if your garage door is hooked up to the internet its already been done by someone else and you can try and find/contact the person who did that.
if your garage door is not, and only uses iR then you are out of luck

Garage door hooked up to the internet?! You've gotta be kidding. I've never heard of such a thing. what's the point?
as far as remote keyless entry goes, from what I read, the built in security measures used by most cars is too elaborate and intricate to be duplicated. A lot of them use 40 bit encryption and rolling codes to ensure security. There are TRILLIONS of possible combinations for codes and, even if you did figure one out, it's a rolling code so it changes every time it's used.
Does anyone know if the phone is capable of broadcasting ~300mHz RF (they use radio frequencies...not infra red. IR only works line of sight...your tv remote is IR.) signals? If the phone can do it, the idea might be possible.

Also, I meant to ask you, yawhatever...what year/make/model car. I have been in the same boat as you where I needed a keyless entry remote (twice, actually) and was disgusted by the dealer's price quote. Let me know and I can more than likely get you one...I know people...:-)

Don't count on that garage door opener or remote entry. I am not sure what frequency the G1 transmits in (refer to the manual, it's there) but could you imagine talking on your G1 and suddenly your garage door opens or your door unlocks!
Don't dispare, you could have a blue tooth enabled garage door opener that could have an interface on your G1:D Cool idea [writes patent -> makes money -> I'm sure you'll sue]
As far as your car, maybe some day they'll make it with blue tooth enabled and then your car can tell you if it is healthy and then you wouldn't have to pay the repair shop oodles of money for them to connect it to a sensor probe. Then everyone will want one and the car industry gets saved -HA!
