View Full Version : Why a pre order so early?

Maybe I'm thinking too much, but why would T-Mobile offer a pre order so far in advance if we're not going to get our phones before the launch date? I mean, I can see a couple of weeks in advance, but if they have a limit on how many G1s can be pre ordered, shouldn't they also have that same amount ready to be shipped right then?

Not sure exactly what you mean there at the end, but they started their pre-sell a month before release. I think its a good amount of time to begin pre-selling them. I couldnt tell ya for sure, but most companies allow some product available for pre-sale and send out some to all the stores for regular purchase.

Not only does it somewhat "reward" their dedicated customers, but it gives them an idea of how big the demand is for them so they can order the proper amount.

Um how is it a reward if someone can just goto a T-Mobile store and buy one the same day us prereleasers recieve ours... I say we should get ours a week earlier or someone... anyone else on this same thought-wave?

Nah, the reward is that we don't have to leave our homes. We can go to work and come home to our G1s waiting for us. No lines, no depression when the phone is sold out, nothing but PURE UNADULTERATED CELEBRATION!!!!!

I can see what the OP is getting at. For both the Sidekick 3 and Sidekick LX launch, pre-orderers got their devices a week before the general public. I sure would appreciate this now!!!

Well hopefully we get our phones a week before the release! I can tell you i would love that! But im not going to get myself psyched up about it, because the 22nd is so far away! nevermind thinking it might come a week beforehand, then still having to wait till the 22nd!

plain and simple...pre-orders = funding to make more phones.
lots of pre-orders means, there is a good demand for the product, thus, that money can go into making enough available at actual launch.
thats my 2 cents. :)
if i pre-ordered, i would want my phone before anyone else, but as it sits..you're still getting your phone the same day i can get mine, so thank you for paying to have my phone made :)

I can see your first point, that pre-orders will show the potential demand for the phone (which could then allocate funds for more phones) but our preorders aren't paying for your phone since most of us won't be billed until November or December. Besides I'm lazy...I want my phone to show up at my door :D

lots of reasons why a pre-order would be this early... its not even that early imo, a month? ever try pre-ordering a video game? sometimes you can do this a year in advance... just like theres lots of reasons why companies do mail in rebates, they don't make sense to you, but they make a heck of a lot of sense from a business standpoint... and although you may hate it, its ultimately 90 percent of the time your fault you didn't get what you want; and don't take that personally, we're talking about general masses...

Another reason to pre-order: I paid $179, current price at T-mobile.com is $299.

good point. I follow writers who publishes on a small press and they preorder many months, sometimes a year in advance.

Did anyone preorder Halo 2? I preordered it the day preorders were available, and waited patiently while it was repeatedly pushed back. Well over a year went by before I actually got the game, and I ended up getting some pre-release.
Preordering isn't making T-Mobile any money for production because we aren't getting charged until it's released, and even then won't have to pay for another month. It does help them gauge the interest in the phone. I agree that it's a "benefit" to customers even if they don't give it to us in advance. I'd much rather get home and have a fresh black G1 sitting at my doorstep than go to a store and possibly get one, then have to deal with the agents at the store and rush hour traffic after work. Instead, I'll be cruising home (at the speed limit, of course) after verifying on UPS that the package has been delivered, and will have a smile on my face knowing that santa came early this year :)

preordering allows tmobile to show that the demand for the G1 is so high that they sold out before the release!!! ( lol ) thats the big hope they want, plus for the press and for google and the wireless companies it shows them that open source handsets ( android platforms ) are the future, it also puts them in a good position to have alot of devices being delivered to customers maybe a few days early to boost the hype up about the device. they dont want to copy iphone and have people camped out for a day just to fork over 499 for a phone, but preorder it for less than half, have almost the same device, with better options, on a better 3g network ( if available in your area ), then the word spreads like wildfire that the G1 is getting good reviews from its users, media, and press and the holiday season will be good for tmobile.
The stores will sell out of the G1 the first day, cause the wing did the same thing when it came out and so did the mda.

I read that a signature is required for delivery. So if no one is at home, you will be cruising to UPS after work to wait in line to claim your package. But at least you know you will be getting one.

For this very reason I'm not going in to the office that day.
Thought Android was a good excuse to take a day off work
I wouldn't want to miss my package :D
