Is there or when will there be 3G in the DC Metro area? I live in Elkridge, MD which is closer to Baltimore, but I work in DC. Hopefully there will be service in both major cities and I'll have it when I'm at home.

The actual date hasn't been made official, but it's supposed to be available before the end of 2008. Just keep in mind that until a date is made official, don't view it as a surefire thing. Things don't always go as planned!

I'll be waiting for 3G coverage in DC as well. I suspect it will be a lot like Verizon rolling out FiOS, you won't know it's there until one day your phone is much faster than usual...

Well, since T-Mobile 3G is being watched so closely, we'll probably know before it rolls out. Once they get all the major cities taken care of, probably won't hear about it any more and the suburbs will slowly start receiving 3G coverage at random.
I'm hoping it hits Huntsville either late this year or early next year. The "metropolitan area" which is basically 3 cities within a small radius has over a half million people, so I hope our priority isn't too low.

But...isn't DC a major city? Surely if Baltimore is, DC must be.

Nobody said DC wasn't a major city:D
They go based on revenue generated by each city, how many people they can reach with how much money, etc etc. They're going to prioritize to the highest density, highest revenue areas, and slowly work their way to the rest of the network.
Next year will be a good year for 3G across all areas. The networks will probably expand immensely due to the increased data usage and services.

The DC area doesn't seem to have too many T-Mobile subscribers (completely anecdotal evidence based on what my friends use). I see a lot of Verizon and Sprint here because those are the only carriers with coverage in the subway system--I suspect that has something to do with why they're doing Baltimore first.
Among my friends with T-Mobile most of them are not the type of people who would be buying a phone like this, so I'm guessing their best market within DC is users of other carriers that they could convert over. But as I said with the subway thing, that won't work for a sizeable niche of Vzn and Sprint customers, and besides T-Mobile's coverage around here sometimes leaves something to be desired.

That's not entirely true. It has to do with geography as well. They started closest to home (Seattle) and in San Diego at the same time. Progressively working up the West Coast, Portland and Los Angeles were next, then San Fran.
