I read somewhere that is may be possible to change the OS on the G1 using the Jailbreak exploit... Is this really possible, if so any idea if someone is working on this?
Thanks!

you really should take this up on XDA Developers. They're talking about it. Their current opinion is MAYBE and even if it is technically possible, it's going to take a lot of work.
So don't hold your breath . . .

why???? I think most people bought this phone for the Android OS and not the looks. Why would you run a different OS on it, especially WM6. Sorry for the lack of any type of answer to your question...

We can only hope that WinMO (any version) + G1 never , ever happens...

Android is too cool. Why would anyone in their right minds want to run a different OS on the G1? Why not spend the time contributing to Android development? Is this whole idea really that foreign to people? Working together? Open Source? Besides, there are other HTC phones very similar to the G1 that already have Wince on them, right? I know its not called Wince anymore, but it should be.

I Got the G1 as a present, The android is cool, but right now I'm having WM6 seperation pains, I've always been A windows guy, and like to flexiblity and availability of free stuff for it. Android may be a nice UI and much more friendly but I like the Technical aspect of WM6, i just may be crazy LOL
But the point being I recieved the phone as a gift and don't want to insult the person

It was a nice Gift and very thoughtfully, of course I had bought them a HTC Touch Diamond a week before, so it wasn't like it was absolutely free LOL.
If It could be done I would put WM6 even if it meant a chance of bricking the Device, that's what full insurance is for, cause ya never tell them you were messing with the firmware, there is a allot can be done with a static discharge generator LOL

Why is everyone knocking WinMo? I've had the MPX200, MPX220, MDA and Wing all with Windows Mobile on them. WinMo2003 sucked horribly but WinMo5 got a lot better and WinMo6 and 6.1 made some nice improvements. Microsoft has a bad rep with a lot of people for good reasons, but i never had any major issues on WinMo, minor annoyances mostly. But WinMo has what 8 years on Android! They have taken suggestions from the community and made certain updates to make the OS better!
I hate fanboyism, Android is very cool and eventually will be superior to all the other mobile OSs, but right now its in its infancy stages and has a lot of growing up to do! I completely understand why people want WinMo on the G1. You can't get this kind of hardware anywhere else for under $300 unless its used. WinMo has been rung thru the ringers and has a lot of features people are used to, eventually Android will have those features...but the keyword is eventually! So why not use what is best for now and then try out Android in 6 months again? Its obvious that the users who want WinMo so much are never going to program in Java to create what they want. So why shouldn't they have the option to run something they are more familiar with until Android can fulfill their needs?
One of the biggest things about open source is that it gives you the option to make changes that you want, if you see a feature that you like or don't like and you have the knowledge, you can completely change that feature to suit your needs! Its about customizing and tweaking! Putting WinMo on the G1 is just another customization....that is what Open Source is all about! But all of the people who never even heard of Open Source until they got their G1 are just spewing out the same crap they have read hardcore Linux geeks spit out! They don't even understand what Open Source is about at all!
I have been following Android for well over a year and half and was very eager to get my G1. I have had some disappointments with the OS, there are some things they should have finished before releasing the phone. I am sure it was corporate that rushed this device out, but I knew i was looking at a beta OS and being an early adopter that there would be some growing pains. I was fully aware of that, and i feel the press conference was misleading to the average cell phone user. T Mobile and Google made it sound like the OS was 100% done, If that was the case we wouldn't be getting the features we are in Q1 2009! They would of already been built in, if the OS was 100%
Damn just realized how much i typed in here, I need to get back to work.
But that was just my 2cents on the situation! Just want to tell all the people saying that WinMo should not be on the G1, to stop being fanboys! Android was created so google can make a ****load of cash off mobile users, but it was also created because they seen a lacking in the mobile area and wanted to take a shot at fixing that! Thats what google does and usually very well! they just aren't there yet!

Agreed. I had a T-Mobile Dash with WinMo 6 and it was horrible. Constant reboots, would lock up on me, had to reboot it once a week (just like a PC), just overall glitchy.
At first I thought it was just me but then I found a ton of other Dash owners online that were just as frustrated as me.
Maybe it was just the Dash hardware (I've been told that the Dash was a very underpowered device); still though, I've pretty much sworn off ever owning another WinMo cell phone.

Yeah, I wouldn't base your judgement of WinMo on the freaking Dash. That thing was horribly underpowered and more importantly had jack sh!t for ram. That was one of the worst phones I've ever seen and yet T-Mobile has let it stick around for so long so they can say that they have smartphones. I'm so glad they've got going again and with the new 3G network, we should see some exciting phones coming to T-Mobile soon enough.

It's possible with Debian because Debian supports the platform and has all sorts of tricks for getting itself up and running.
WM6? Not likely unless Microsoft does something pretty major to the code.

Rebooting once a week and constant reboots? Which is it?
The dash must of been very underpowered...I had the MDA and Wing (PocketPCs), WinMo ran decent. There were tweaks that you had to do but that is with everything these days. I hardly had any crashes, did have a few freezes, but it has 64 megs of ram and 128 megs of flash. I think Winmo would run very nicely on the G1s hardware. Would be nice to give WM7 a try on this device, cause i know it won't run on the Wing.
