I have some questions before I take the plunge. First off I keep seeing complaints about a squeaky screen issue with the screen. If I bought a new model now do you think HTC would have solved this issue? Does anyone have a new G1 they ordered recently (I know the device is only a few months old but still) to verify?

Also, I'm in college right now and I'm surrounded by wifi and I'm not in a 3G area so I don't really need the data plan. Is there a way to get the phone without the data plan or even use T-zones (I still have it grandfathered on my account for 2.99).

Lastly, I'm with T-mobile right now so if I get the G1 I would be getting a new contract, so is there anyway to get out of this dumb "upgrade fee." I really don't like the idea of paying to get a contract.

Just buy the data plan and cancel it.

If they ask why, just say you accidentally bought it and was going to give the G1 as a present.

All you need is the data plan to verify your gmail, after that part you don't even need the data plan.

It just makes life... easier? I guess.

As the squeaky part... all phones have it.

But i tell you, if you buy a G1. Don't take off the back cover piece of the screen, the part where you slide up. It helps it a lot to not squeak. Mine fell off and start to creak and ****, just going to put tape or something there.

Hope I helped.

Mine has never made one bit of noise...just the sound of awesomness opening up :p just thought I would put in my .02

Just remember though that having your wifi active all day will greatly affect your battery life. (maybe if you just turn it on when you need it...or every hour or so to sync your email)

The same goes for having 3G on all day, don't you think? I've 3G disabled and Wifi enabled all day and battery life has been acceptable. Of course, I believe Wifi sleeps with the phone.
