I kind of talked about this I believe on the same subject - it may happen it was someone else - but you definitely need replacement. I am getting about 3.5-4 days with avg usage.

Net,
I *just* got this one as a replacement.

Geez....and I thought I was doing good because mine lasts from 6:00AM to about 11:00PM
Can you give a little advice on what you did to improve it?

the only draining thing I use now is autosync and that HAS to stay on for business (I've just got too many calender/email things to worry about). I mean my bberry is the same, it's dead at the end of the day too, but man 10-5 is not long at all.

I gave up and just bought additional chargers; one to leave at work and one for the car.
Pretty sad to say I’m never away from home, work or my car more than six hours and that I need to worry much about the battery lasting long enough to get to any one of those. If I were, I guess I’d consider getting one of those solar chargers – assuming of course that at least some of those hours away would be during the day.
Lameness has it’s advantages, I guess.

from my blackberry and tmo mda, I have four charges and one 2 car charges laying around. I'll never be without power, it's just that I wish this thing had a little more battery life

I turn my screen light to 0 and my phone lasts a damned long time. Not 3 to 4 days mind you, but I've gone to bed with 50% juice and gone through most of the next day without having to charge it. But I do have 3G enabled, and I tend to switch to Wifi sometimes.

How's the signal strength in the areas you tend to be the most often? The weaker the signal, the more juice your phone's gonna use keeping connected.

fair amount. I turned off calender and contact autosync to see if that's the culprit

I cannot confirm this.. but where do you usually keep your phone?
I keep mine in the pocket and I've noticed that sometimes its pretty warm when i take it out.
My conclusion is that its looking for service and it drains the battery.
I bought a belt holster and I'm gonna see if battery improves a little bit.

mine sits on my desk by me most of the day.
light use. unplugged at 11am. It's not 4pm and it's at 64%
5 hours people...5 hours and I'm almost at half.

well I'm coming on 7 hours and I'm at 54%. If this thing were to make it another 7, then I suppose I wouldn't bitch.
I'm about to do some moderate use with it, we'll see what happens there. I'm sure it'll drain on it a bit.
But if it does make it another 7...then I think it'll be a keeper.

okay I'm on hour 11 and at 33%
maybe this is more doable than I thought. That said, it was not used much today. some light surfing...everything turned off except once or twice today. No 3g used at all. A few phone calls, nothing lengthy...I think one was 20 minutes

hour 12 and at 31%.
It seems that the big drain happens earlier on in the battery scheme of things and then it slows down towards the end.
I'm going to let it completely drain out (which may be over night). But it'd be nice to see it hit 20 hours again. I think the streaming audio killed it for me yesterday.
If I could constantly get 12-13 hours a day, I'd be happy (as that's about my work day).

I hear that autosync is now the culprit and the one draining the battery. That sucks because that's what I need the most

.
Dude. I tried the streaming app today, and you could've fried an egg on the back of the phone! It also made the whole OS CRAWL. I don't know if that app is just coded a little loose, or if streaming audio is necessarily that intensive, but I could FEEL the battery draining when I was doing that.

It's the radio/RF unit. There is a post somewhere on AC that related what friends from Qualcomm told him about the G1/Dream's chipset. Apparently, the CPU/GPU is tight, but the radio chipset is old, inefficient, and battery-sucking.

rynosaur,
I turned off autosync and got 20 hours (Albeit I was asleep).
So this chipset...do you think they are going to fix it? have a software update for it or what? Because if that's the case, this is the definite dealbreaker

20 hours meaning from
11am yesterday til 9am today. I turned autosync off at 10pm last night

I have 3G, auto-sync, and bluetooth on, and with light usage (a couple of short calls, minimum web, no music), I frequently get 10-12 hours out of the battery, some times more.
I find that besides these settings, screen timeout seems to be a big deal. I find that some times the phone does not time out, and the screen stays on. I think that eats battery significantly, both because the screen is on, and also maybe some apps is actively running in the back ground that should not have been running, which is probably the reason that the screen is not timing out. When this happens, usually my phone feels very warmer. When the screen is timed out, nothing is running and I just have it in my pocket, its usually feels pretty cool.
One more thought, maybe when screen is timed out and locked, the processes that runs on the screen like notification and status bar are put to sleep and takes up less power.
Also when the screen is locked, the touch screen is not responsive to touches at all, being in this state may also save the phone some juice.

I'm no programming or hardware genius but if this issue could be dramatically improved in the first gen iPhones, then we could get fixes too.
However, by following my 12-week battery fitness program, I had to try really really hard last night to kill my battery.
In 8 hours I:
1. Used GPS heavily drivng around
2. Streamed audio
3. Used the web
4. Left everything on but BT + network (after driving) with Power Manager
5. Used Gmote a bunch
6. Talked on the phone
7. Streamed video for two hours
that took me from 99% to 2%
Not too shabby. My 12-week battery program includes a steady diet of coffee and cigarettes, and the G1 gets wiped with a very soft cloth a lot. :)
