Hi all,

On Black Friday, I dropped by G1 in the parking lot and the casing that covers the Memory Card broke off. There is just a tiny sliver of plastic left covering the slot and my G1 often cannot find my memory card.

I am still within the 14 day return period--do you think I should return my G1, or should I not even bother since it was my fault?

Thanks for any help.

Turn off your phone, remove the back plate and remove the battery. Once you remove the battery there will be a small dot that is visible where the battery was located.

Is the dot white or a different color? (The dot is used by T-mobile to tell if you dropped the phone from to high).

The dot is white.

I'm mostly concerned about the fact that I am now missing the casing for the memory card slot--it fell off and I couldn't find it. And the plastic coating on the back plate is peeling now.

If the dot is white they have no way to tell you dropped the phone, other than the damage and the story you tell them. You should be able to go back and get the phone replaced depending on what information you share with the cs reps.

i had a similar experience...dropped my g1 from a high spot and it hit hardwood i think it must have messed up the card reader...I called t-mo the said i have to see if it was the SD card that was faulty and try another SD card in the g1 and if that doesn't work than factory reset they say use a different Sd card because if the Sd card undergoes a certain amount of pressure it will stop working...call them and they will replace it no problem although when i called i didnt say anything about me dropping it and they said if there are any cracks it costs $100 so you may be out of luck but i was out of my 14 days..sorry if that was confusing hope it helped..just call them they have great CS

Those are obvious signs of damage. They will not give you a new phone. But, you can sign up for the insurance for the phone (since you are still in your trial period), wait a few days, and then call the insurance (asurion) for a claim. You have to pay $130, but you will get another phone.

Well....

I first spoke to someone in customer service, then they told me to take it back to the T-Mob store where I bought it.

They then put me on a webcam call with a tech person at T-Mobile, who stated that because it was clear that the phone had physical damage on it, they would not replace it.

So I asked for the manager of the store, who proceeded to say "just exchange it!"

So, voila, I was able to return it AND I exchanged it for a spiffy new WHITE G1!!

Now if only I could find the other half of the contents on my memory card... and get my Cox webmail to work on my G1.

Just to let you know, what you are suggesting is actually insurance fraud. Just a heads up, be careful with things like this.

Also, for everyone, the dot in the back is a liquid damage indicator, and will turn pink or red with liquid damage. Has nothing to do with dropping the phone

As long as there is no water damage, you can return it. Just state "The update (RC33) messed up my memory card slot" and you will get a brand new one :-p. Im on my 3rd already.
