Recently added a line and bought G1 from for that line. The customer rep said that I can cancel my data plan later. So I activated the phone and called the customer service today to cancel the data plan. The lady said that G1 won't work w/o the data plan. I told her that everyone is saying that it works w/o the data plan. She said it might have worked in the past, but we have changed the setup NOW so that it won't work without the data plan.....
Is this true? Anyone has more info?
I tried my other t-mobile SIM card that does not have a data plan and it seems to work fine with only WiFi.....???
Thanks for any info!

It's a bunch of bull; they fed me the same line. They're playing on your fear of having a nonworking phone. You only need the data plan to activate the device (login to Google). After that you could just use WiFi for networking.
I went to tmobile store yesterday to get my family plan renewed and to pick up a g1 phone without the internet plan. they told me that i couldnt get the phone without the internet plan, so i went home and called up customer service and they gave me the phone for the same price without the internet plan. dont know why your rep said you needed the internet plan.

Well of course they want you to get the data plan.

They want you to get the Data Plan cause that's how they get money.
Don't tell them you can cancel it without using the plan >_>
they might tell Google to update it or something!

Whats the point of having a g1 if you don't have 3G internet at all times? T-mobile might want more money but its stupid having the phone without the data plan.

im pretty sure when they say it "wont work" they actually mean "not every single function of this phone will operated the way intended without the data plan" as in no plan: no edge/3g/text.

Because some people have Wifi 98% of the time. It'd be stupid to have the data plan.
yea you dont have to have a data plan, i just ordered mine, and it wasnt till this morning i realized the guy never even asked what data plan i wanted, turns out he didnt mark me down for a data plan, only a phone plan... so i had to call back and tell them what i wanted...

Btw any way to keep my current $3.99 EDGE data plan which works quite well for me and get the T1? I would get it but don't want to pay for data, but I _would_ need a data plan I think. DOes the Wifi on Android support WPA2 enterprise btw?
Thanks
Misha

According to reports there is no WPA2Enterprise support at the moment. There is, however, WPA2Personal support.
