Hi ,
I just bought an unlocked Google G1 phone outside US . However I can not access Gmail or market place as it has some email account already configured and i am not sure whats the password. I have googled to find out how to reset this account and use my own gmail account .
Some threads suggest that resetting to factory defaults with proper local APN setting will do that , but since this is an unlocked Phone , my concern is that would it affect the phone if i do a factory reset ?
Is there a way to find out how the phone was unlocked ? proper TMobile code or jail broken ?
Does Factory reset helps in resetting the initial gmail account ?
Please help .
Thanks

1. are you with t-mobile
2. if you are do you have the g1 internet?
3. theres no way to find out who did the unlock
4. "jailbreaking" a phone, as much as i hate that term, is not unlocking your phone at all... it may lead to an easier unlock, but its more associated with having administrator access to the phone that you previously may not have had
6. factory resetting the phone should cause no issues for you
5. if it was unlocked, what you can probably do is attempt a login, press the try again or back button, press the menu button and you should be able to enter your APN manually if you are using a different service

No i am not with Tmobile, i am outside US .
I can access Internet over WIFI , Haven't checked Edge .
You mentioned attempt a login ? login where? to Gmail or market place . selecting gmail doesen't give anything , it stays at "your email will appear shortly" and menu button does not work at this point .
i receive notifications that sync was not succesful , when i select this notificaiton i get the login screen with the email address already defined which i cannot change .
as i received it like this . and probably this is the email address with which was used to unlock the phone .
At the Gmail screen when i press back it gets me back to the Home of applications .
thanks for your reply ,

the login attempt i was speaking of was after you factory reset the phone, so the phone acts as its brand new out of box... there is a way to do it over wifi, i'll have to look that up and try and find it... if you have EDGE service and subscribe to a data plan with your carrier, factory reset the phone, attempt to login with YOUR address and password and follow the directions that i stated... try hitting the back button and opening up the menu

It worked for me ,
Thanks Tread for your responses.
I simply did a factory default reset from settings - SDcard ....Factory data reset
At the reboot provided my account information and defined the local APN setting as you recommended as well.
thanks again .

Same thing with me .just bought an unlocked G1 Phone in Dubai. My Dubai SIM is working. I made APN settings of my carrier and is working fine. But my unlocked phone has a gmail activation in its reseller name and when ever I start the phone it can not srinc as I do not have a password for it. EVen if I have the password, it will be of no use to me. If anyone an advise me that how to activate my own g mail account. And if done it should not lock the phone.
Shall I also do the same thing as Cacus. Will I loose all my Contact info which I manully fed in yesterday.
(Now I did as per Cacrus and got everything ok...Thanks alot you both guys..)

You can change the account without resetting if AnyCut is already installed: make a shortcut to "Setup Wizard."

Well , it actually worked for me the same day i posted my last comment , i should have posted solution earlier .
All i did was , used the factory reset from settings-SD card , and than rebooted ,
On the next reboot i entered my email address and detail and setup the APN from local telecom to connect to Google server to authenticate .
So i guess All you need to make sure is that you have a SIM which has Data servic gprs / EDGE enabled , eve if its not your SIM .

Ah, a fellow Dubai resident! Not many of us around here, I'm afraid, but I'll do my best to help.
If you are able to get into Settings, then you can simply do a factory reset. I believe you bought your phone from a seller on Souq.com and many of them have faced handset returns from initial buyers who just could not get used to them. That said, as long as your phone is in good working condition, you should not have cause for alarm.
I have been setting up G1s for over 10 people so far (I'm not a dealer, just a fellow enthusiast whose friends have been impressed enough with the G1 to ask me to help them acquire some on their behalf), and the easiest way to get this over and done with is to power down the phone, then hold Home and the End/Power key together till the phone starts up and you see a microchip with an arrow on the screen. Press Alt-L, followed by Alt-W and this will run a full wipe of the device and restore it to factory settings, after which you can just set it up normally. Are you with du or Etisalat?

Hi,
Actually I am anew member so I don't know much about Android. But I really agree with the APN setting Idea, since I have tried the same and it really worked great with me.
I just would like to make an easy tip for those who find it really difficult.
1. You must have another mobie which can be set automatically when configuration is sent by the service provider.
2. Call your service provider operator and ask to send the internet/GPRS configuration to your additional mobile (for example Nokia).
3. Now, browse to the connection setting and copy the setting manually by entering them manually to the T-mobile G1. (Note that you can create a new APN).
4. Now, turn off - on your mobile and follow the registration tips. When you look at the notification tab, you will find the 3G sign and two arrows moving.
5. Congratulations. You have signed in.
Note: This can work only for unlocked T-mobile G1.
Hope this makes your life easy
Good luck!

And here I thought I was slick for Clearing Data on application "Google Apps", in Settings.
Well-played, sir.

No. Sim unlock is permanent. It survives software update, hard reset... but you will need to reactivate the phone to be able to use it.
