A new version of ChompSMS has just been released, you can now send SMS messages through your mobile carrier so you no longer have to purchase credits to use this app!

That's pretty cool. Apart from the iPhone bubbles is there any more features?

According to their website www.chompsms.com, it looks like they'll be adding a touchscreen keyboard and smilies. I think the on screen keyboard will be quite good, it'll make it a lot easier to text someone using one hand. I wish Android had an on screen keyboard built in to the UI.

very cool app, i like the layout. i would like to see mms support, though, and for that reason i'm uninstalling.

I just received this from someone at Chomp.

BTW, We've just put version 1.3 up on the market. The notifications are now configurable and contacts should all display properly plus limited mms handling.

I love Chomp. The only issue that I've had so far is that if you create an AnyCut "direct text" link on your desktop, it doesn't use Chomp, even though Chomp assumes all other messaging roles by default. Hopefully the folks at Chomp will be able to change that behavior.

According to the Chomp Website, they are working on a virtual keyboard. I'd like that especially if it rotated via the accelerometer.

I tried Handcent SMS Sender because it says it has a virtual keyboard. Unfortunately the virtual keyboard is in portrait mode, and doesn't work as well as the one in QSearch (which works very well). I uninstalled HandCent.

Wow, I've gotten word back already that there's currently no easy work around, but they are going to pass it to the developers.

You don't have to pay for SMS unless you don't currently have SMS services or theirs are cheaper.

So, what if I currently pay too much for SMS messages how can I send them cheaper? Well, simply buy credits (http://www.chompsms.com/payment/buy_credits_1), and each time you compose an SMS, choose to send it via the chompSMS network instead of your mobile carrier.

So, you'd only do that if their price is cheaper than you're paying now. Assuming that it's not, then you'd just send them normally instead of using their service.

I just downloaded this, its awesome. I love how i can set it to be default with the notification bar and the virtual keyboard is perfect!

Instead of paying to buy credits... You can add (www.t-mobile.com/MESSAGING/) to your bookmarks to send sms through the net... Just enter the right (10-digit) phone number...

Maybe we can tease a developer to create an app that would use the web interface to send sms to t-mobile (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/www.t-mobile.com/MESSAGING/), AT&T (http://www.onlinetextmessage.com/att-text-message.php), verizon (https://text.vzw.com/customer_site/jsp/messaging_lo.jsp)phones

So, on a technical note, if you turn off the notifications for the native messaging app does this turn off the notifications for MMS as well? I got a few e-mails today and didn't receive notification bar updates when I received them. Right now this app is about 85% perfect for me, it'll reach 100% when the VK can be used in landscape, when there is auto rotate, and when MMS is fully integrated. Great app and VK is very helpful! It has replaced the native messaging app for me at the moment.

I no longer get a notification from Missed Call, but I do get the blinking LED.

I thought for a moment I was onto something, like figuring out how to get a notification. However I don't think my hypothesis was correct. :(

I love this app but HATE the double notification issue in the status bar. I think that my settings from dgAlert (my #1 favorite app for the phone) are causing this but I'm not sure. I e-mailed the developers of both apps the following e-mail to see if they could help- I will let you know what I find out.

Hey there Chompsms and dgAlert. LOVE THE APPS! Seriously- I could go on and on. . . but I won't.

Quick question though. I can't seem to make it so I get an sms notification in the status bar ONLY from Chomp and not the native app. No matter what I do, I get one from the native messaging app and one from chomp every time- very annoying. I have deselected the notifications option in the native app but even when I do that the native status bar notification pops up. I assume this is because of dgAlert (AMAZING APP- SO USEFUL- THANK YOU!) and its relationship with the native app. I love both applications and would love it if there could be some sort of solution so that a guy like me could utilize the amazing convenience and UI of Chomp and still take advantage of the seriously needed sms alert modifications dgAlert allows me to customize. I have CC'ed the developers of both programs on this e-mail to see if either/both might be able to help. Thank you and keep up the amazing work!

You can easily get rid of the double notification in the bar, you just have to go into the original SMS app and turn off the notifications, sense both apps run side by side it would suck to get both at the same time. so turn the one your not using off, and i personal use the original ONLY to send MMS.

it all works really well, i love the on screen keyboard, and it rotates fine, and i love the option to turn the auto-rotate off.

its just all around a great app.
5*s lol.

What he means is he has the HTC Magic Build on his phone. It was ported by a guy named Haykuro. You need to root your phone first and it isn't that stable (i.e. has a few bugs).

If you are interested you can get it here: http://haykuro.theiphoneproject.org/

I'm not sure if everyone is still following this thread but I'd like to suggest better implementation with SMS Pop up! I love these two apps and I can't live without either of them.

I was just hoping that we can get the "delete" button to work with ChompSMS. Also, if we could make it possible so when ChompSMS is already on the screen and I'm in the conversation for the pop up to be disable for the time being.

I'm not sure which App is capable of doing what, but I'm suggesting these two features to both SMS Pop up and ChompSMS.

Merely because these two are necessary for android users.

Does no one else get annoyed by how ChompSMS uses the iPhone scheme? LAME.

Maybe there are themes and I just don't know about it?

I just updated to the newest ChompSMS version which is supposed to support MMS. But not only is it not showing the MMS, but it also won't give me the option to view it in the native messaging app. Anybody else have this experience?

If you go to settings you can switch between using there services(credits) or using your carriers service. Or you can buy more credits from there website.

If you change your preference to send over carrier, it will be just like sending a regular message. Personally since cupcake, I uninstalled it since there is an on screen keyboard now. That was the only thing I liked about Chomp.

Uhhh...why use Chomp SMS now that we have an On Screen Keyboard? That was the only reason to use the iPhone look alike in the first place
