Greetings,
Upon launch day in SF I purchased two black G1's. I greatly enjoyed them but noticed manufacturing defects with both of them. One had sunken in keys while the other had a squeaky and floppy sliding mechanism. When I traded in the squeaky/floppy G1 at the Tmo store, I asked the sales rep to pull out three black G1's and told her that I'd pick the one that I felt was up to par in regards to build quality. After dealing with the sales rep's attitude she brought them out and I picked the best of the group. This particular phone was much tighter than the previous G1 but had slightly sunken in keys, but I took it. Weeks later, here comes the white G1. My girlfriend really wanted the white G1, so I traded her black G1 in at the Tmo store. I made the same request to view three different G1 and found each of them to be spectacular in build quality! Looking at them, the seams on the white G1 were much tighter. When handling both phones in your hand, the white G1's felt much much more solid and I swear they feel a bit lighter! There was no squeakiness and when you shake the phone with the keyboard open there is no floppiness or clicking sound because it's so tightly fit. Bottom line is that the white G1 is superior to the black G1 in terms of build quality. Even though I like the look of the black better, I'm trading it in for a white G1 because it feel so much better in my hand.
Attached are some pics to compare the two (note the tighter fit of the white G1), Enjoy!
