Interesting...

T-Mobile's G1 phone, which runs Google's Android operating system, just doesn't have the cultural icon status of Apple's iPhone. But HTC, the Taiwanese company that makes the G1, revised its 2008 sales forecast up to one million, from an initial 600,000. (For context, Apple sold a million iPhones in the first 74 days.) Silicon Alley Insider asks the burning question: Who here bought one? Are G1 owners somehow different from iPhone evangelists who need to show their superphone to everyone on the bus?

I've yet to see another G1 in the wild. Now, I live in an edge-only city, so that may have something to do with it (Virginia Beach). I don't even know if they have my phone in the tmo stores (I bought mine online and haven't been in any lately). So, from my point of view, it doesn't look like there are a lot of G1's out there. I'm glad that they are selling well though.

Well, having a unique phone is a good thing. The iPhone is no longer the status symbol it used to be due to market saturation. Android will also have diluted meaning sooner or later, but at least now it's special.

I live in Los Angeles and I have never seen one in the wild either, not that I get out much these days, LOL... I think people who have them are probably embarrassed to be seen with one due to all the reviews and dumb ass commenters at places like Giz and Eng that keep calling it fuggly every chance they get! Seriously though judging by the wide variety of people I've seen checking it out with wide eyes at T-Mobile stores, I don't think that's the case.
I still don't get the pure hate... I love the looks of it! It is the complete domination of function over form, which fits my personality just fine...

HTC making 1 million devices and selling them to T-mobile is vastly different having 1 million devices on the street. Not every G1 T-mobile ordered has been sold.

My wife is a nurse and she has already seen two or three G1's amongst the staff at work, including one doctor. Doctors at her hospital are notoriously geeky when it comes to their smartphones.
Also ... she has noticed many employees at the hospital have switched from Verizon to T-Mobile in the last year or so -- when I asked why, she said because everyone texts a lot, and that texting is cheaper with T-Mo than with Vzw.
I work out of my home, so am not out as much as many, but still ... several guys I know saw my G1, were curious, and asked me about it.

The limited supply is bound to create a perverse demand :)

I live in an Edge only area as well, Ogden Utah, and a few guys where I work have them, but I work for toptenreviews.com, with a bunch of programmers so I am not surprised. Everywhere I go other than work I get people asking "Is that the new G1?" or "What kind of phone is that?" or the more insulting "Is that a new IPhone?"
While I was in Las Vegas a couple weeks ago, I was looking for accessories, and of the 5 shops I stopped by, only one had even seen a G1 in real life, the rest I was a first, and of course, all wanted to see it in action. The sad part of this story, Las Vegas is a TMO 3G area.
