For some reason my G1 refuses to let me enter my voice mailbox number for o2. Any idea why?

It won't let me change it on my t-mobile usa model either. I tried entering the number for youmail and it just refuses to accept the change.

Dial the following number (including the * as if you were making a call) to have YouMail receive your voice mails:
*004*17142043114#

I'd rather just have the ability to enter my voicemail number tbh!

so type *004* then the voicemail number # and send.

Arse. I've done this and now it won't divert calls to voicemail at all. When I hit the busy key it cuts the call off. I've tried cancelling all diverts and using the phone to update them but it still doesn't work.
I just wanted to tell the phone what the number was.
<edit>Fixed it with GSM codes. But I'd still like to be able to call voicemail from the 'you have a message' status link.

I know here in the states, we have to enter a + (e.g. +8005551212). Could that be what you're missing?

I can change mine to allow me to speed dial you mail. But every time I power down the phone it defaults back to the origional

Cranky bear: Thanks for the suggestion, but I've already tried just about every permutation: with leading zero, + and country code (44), + without country code or leading zero and still it refuses to let me change it.
Guess I'm just going to have to live with it. Thanks all for the suggestions!

Same problem with German T-Mobile SIM (and on german Network T-Mobile DE):
Missing voicemail number
No Vociemail number is stored on the SIM Card
When trying to Add number, I receive the same error message.
Any help?

Hi everyone,
I am running a G1 (unlocked US version) with a Swiss SIM card (Orange). I get the same message, telling me that the SIM card does not provide a number for the voicemail. Any attempt to enter the number myself gives an error message (as above).
All that I want is to assign a specific number to key "1" on the dialer. This should not be that complicated :-)
Hope that someone has an idea...

I am having the same issue. This has nothing to do with enabling voicemail with my provider, but rather to do with setting the voicemail in the phone. I also use a Swiss provider, namely Sunrise.
I'm guessing that someone in Mountain View made an assumption that a) the voicemail number is stored on the SIM card, and b) that if it's not, then it can be stored by the phone. No Swiss provider I know does this resp. allows this -- the phones have to provide a place in memory to store the voicemail number. Most phones do this -- in fact, all phones I have ever used.
I suppose that's the reasons that they put these developer phones out -- it's cheaper than a proper testing program.
