or can you cancell the data plan after a few months?

i would think that the data plan would not be REQUIRED for the WHOLE 2 YEARS... because there might be people that might have a hard time down the road paying for the data plans due to financial hardnship and would need to lower their cell plan... right?

wasn't there a time that tmobile only required you to keep the data plan for the wing or blackberry for at least 3 months and you would still get the sale price or something like that?

do you all know what i mean? can someone find this out?

The data plan should be able to be canceled later on. Not sure if you would have to extend your contract or not.

I'm fairly certain that you can cancel the data plan -- I think the contract extension is based on the voice plan. Of all the stuff I've been trying to read about the G1 and t-mobile, I haven't read anything stating that the data plan is mandatory -- though with this phone; I think your experience will be less than exciting with no data plan.

Just curious, what use is this phone really without a data plan? Just trying to load a website would get you so much in fee's I can't see not having it.

i think a lot of people who live in big metropolitan areas where wifi is literally everywhere would be able to skate by w/out a data plan, seeing how the G1 auto connects to any available wifi network , i really like that feature, i wish my dash did that automatically.

Typically, you can add/remove additional services whenever you want, even online. Voice plans will make it so your contract ends a year from the change date, unless the original "contract closing date" is later.

It's hard telling what will happen with the data plan on the G1 since it's a new thing. There's always an agent that will remove it for you though...

You are right it would be considered pointless, but like iPostNaK3d said if there is financial hardship no one wants to lose their phone service or go over their spending limit if they have one just for a data plan.

Well I guess that all depends on where your located, now doesn't it? I can think of a multitude of places (dorm, apartment building, parents house, w/ roomates, san francisco, etc etc etc) where wi-fi is in high supply. Being able to check your email or the news from your phone is handy even if you can't afford the data plan. Not everyone can predict their financial future.

I am sure they are going to let you cancel it after a couple of months. Just call them up and say that your phone fell in the pool or something to that effect and that you no longer have it or the phone does not work anymore and I did not purchase insurance. What are they going to do, charge you for a service that you can't use? I did not speak to anyone from t-mobile about this, but I think a good story should get you out of it.

I called TMO last night about the data requirement. According to CS, because data is an added service it may be added/removed at anytime for n/c and is not required for the length of the contract.

when i preoredered, i did not choose any plan (i was upgrading) and when i checked out, it did not tell me i can't do without a data plan. so i verified w/ CS and asked them. they said it's fine. it's just like getting a sidekick without the sidekick plan. they just stressed out it is not using the phone's full potential. i said that's fine with me.

WOW. This is a HUGE advantage of the iphone, IMO. To get the iphone for $200, you DO have to commit to 2 years of a data plan. --And it's more expensive as well. Very cool to know you can add and remove it. VERY cool. Of course, I got one, and I plan to use it, but when times get tight, it's good to know you can make some sacrifices without having to be punished by fines and such.

they know what kind of phone you are using everytime you use the phone. i have an n95-3 and they know because the EMEI number is reflected when you use voice calls.

i would like to know how you did this, i tried to upgrade my wife's line with a G1 without picking the data plan and it gave me an error and a big red warning at the top of the page..........

I guess you'll have to wait and find out. I did it with my Sidekick 2 when I was on a 2 year contract. I called up T Mobile and just told them to take off my voice plan and they did it without a problem even though it was required I choose a voice plan when I purchased the phone.

hmm... that did not show when i did it. could it be that because i have an existing $5.99 unlimted data plan, they would automatically convert it to the new data plan?. interesting!
but it could not be because when i did it on my wife's phone which did not have the data plan, it went through just fine.
i don't know what to tell you but this is what i did:
1. i clicked on the G1 get it first link
2. logged on to my tmo
3. when u place your cursor on "shop" on the left side, it should give you a drop down subcategory
4. clicked on upgrade phone
5. selected the G1, DID NOT tick on any data plan or any on that page(i believe there are 2)
6. proceeded to check out and everything else was a breeze.

The question about the data plan doesn't just apply to people "who don't want data" It applies to people like me. Me and my wife are on a family plan. We have unlimited share text messaging for $19.99 I have the total internet addon for $19.99... the G1 wants a $24.99 or 34.99 plan. so I'll have to pay an extra $5.00 for something I get unlimited for anyways... that's BS and I think there is a way around it, I'll ask my ADR this weekend when I see him. I highly doubt those plans are required to be kept unless for a 3G network area that might be the only data plan acceptable. but for EDGE user's the TIA should work just fine.

I just added a new line for me, to my dads family plan and wasn't planing on keeping the G1, but when I called them to cancel the data plan they told me I had to return the G1 if I wanted to cancel the data plan. Anyway to get through this?

If you are not planning on keeping the G1, then there should be no problem returning it then... NO? (I'm confused!)

When you sign a contract you are signing a contract for the VOICE part. The data plan and or messaging plans are addons.I have been with tmobile for a few years and they have never extended a contract if i cancelled or added a dataplan or anything else that is not voice.
