I am in the EDGE network here in Columbus, Ga and I don't see the need to pay $25 for the data package. Can I still use the EDGE to install applications without the data package or do things like that?

According to Tmobile Rep - G1 is using different server for data connections. So, you can try to mark your telephone in Tmobile profile as I don know - something like blackberry or something and subscribe to 5.99 Tmobile Zones net - and then try to use it on G1 - I don't think it will work but at the same time I don't think you have much options here
I had no data plan on mine before I sold it off and I could download stuff via wifi and just used the phone as a normal phone.

i ordered 2 phones on same line, 1 with data, the other no data yet.
the data-less phone is for stay-@-home mom who is constantly connected to home wifi. works great, no need 4 edge to download apps on market.
main drawback, battery drains fast if wifi is on 24/7.
any particular things u wanna know?
hey, i was going to add a basic edge plan, thought there was 1 for 19.99 but cant find any on t-mo site.

Edge works on the G1 if you have a data plan. If you don't have a data plan you need to bring your own, like wi-fi. On wi-fi the phone is fully functional, away from data you can make and receive calls, text messages and picture messages.

if you don't have a data plan (not 5.99 t-zones) t-mobile will eventually start disabling your data AND VOICE... i don't know how they'll go about doing this, but this is official word... don't get upset that you don't play by their rules if it eventually happens to you

Official because you said so?
Disabling voice on a voice plan because a user does not want data isn't something they would be lawfully allowed to do as the contract extension is for the voice plan and the data plan is only required for signing up.
Don't go starting more rumors.

i don't say official and not mean it
if your local representative does not know about this policy, tell them to do the following:
go into a t-mobile store and tell their manager or on duty senior representative to go into their t-mobile news internal only site, do a search on "g1", and find their known issues section for the g1... it specifically states as of november 6th customers may not be able to use data or a combination of data and voice on their phone if the feature is not added on their account...
obviously i don't have a direct link to it as i am not a t-mobile employee, but this is not confidential information and can be released to the public... i'm not a rumor starter, i'm typically a fact checker as i like to know what i'm dealing with... you'll be unpleasantly surprised to find out that i am right, i saw it with my own eyes and you can too i'm sure
as far as not being able to shut your service off because you don't agree to their "mandatory arbitration" stipulation in their contract, then i offer you to go sue them... i'm guessing most people don't even know what mandatory arbitration is, and they they waive their capability to participate in a class action lawsuit when you sign a contract with any cell phone provider... granted reading their contract and how gross it may be, it still doesn't stop me from signing a 2 year contract with them because i expect to not have these kind of immense problems with them...

Beyond that my contract, as I said, is for voice. Data is an add-on not part of the contract. Suspending my contract for not having data would mean that I am able to void the contract, keep my subsidized phone and be able to move to another cell provider. Not something T-Mobile would find to be in their best interest. There is no text that states my contract is conditional on me having a data plan.

thats what i'm saying, good luck with the class action lawsuit if you choose to go that route, because if they shut your service off and you feel wronged, even threatening them with the BBB or a lawyer won't do... you'll have to go class action level... i'm fully aware of all the lawsuits, especially the biggest class action in history with verizon, theres just no easy way around it and the majority of people i feel will just get run over

No, you don't have to go to a class action lawsuit. Their mandatory arbitration was found unconscionable in a federal court. All one would need is a tort lawyer unless they wanted to pursue it without legal counsel.
