Forwarding Gmail to your TmoMail.net account and other obsessive battery saving tips.

This is a "trick" i used to do to get email on my old crappy phone.

Basically in your gmail settings tell it to forward all your email to 15551234567@tmomail.net [YourPhoneNumber@Tmomail.net]

For those of you who don't know, that's your tmobile email address that sends sms or mms messages to your phone via email. Every carrier provides these automatically.

This way when you get an email it gets automatically "Pushed" to your phone as a text or mms message depending on the size.

But sinister!! Why would you want email sent to your phone as an sms when you have an awesome gmail app on your tricked out G1!!???

Mainly because this way you can disable auto-sync and fetching with the gmail and mail apps thus conserving lots of battery power. Also, when you get the sms you still have the option of opening your gmail app and replying as necessary... but 80% of the time I would rather just glance and see what the email is and deal with it later when I get to a computer. (Sidenote: I wish in the notification bar it said who the email was from not just "New Mail")

This way I only have to sync once a day and not have auto-sync enabled and constantly draining my battery. If battery isn't an issue for you than obviously auto-sync is better... but I'm doing pretty much all I can to preserve battery power..

Today I got my g1 to last from 10am to 8:30pm before dying with heavy use. That's with everything disabled except for edge. I played games, surfed web, listened to music, made calls, texted.. but didn't use wifi, 3g, gps, or wifi locating.. I keep my brightness set to "45" using the Power Manager App (Thats about 20% if you're just eyeballing it)

If you don't live or die by email than this might be for you. If you can't stand having your battery go below 80% than this is for you too...

Also... with the sms/mms forwarding you get your mail quicker than with auto-sync. I have actually gotten sms/mms mail BEFORE the mail actually hit my gmail inbox.

Very nice write up, you do have good valid points. I would find this very useful for people that don’t have a data plan and use wifi when it is available. Just make sure you have an unlimited messaging plan because am sure this will put you over your text package.

^thanks... i did indeed do this prior to having data... but i'm still doing it now... it really does seem easier to read emails in the mms format... no loading, just BAM.

Bumping... mms view on this phone is great for emails.. I don't miss loading the gmail app at all.. plus I get emails quicker when they are pushed via mms... i check my inbox.. and stuff isn't there yet.. but its in my mms inbox on my phone :)

Not to mention the extention of battery life is very noticable since disabing autosync and fetch.

This is ideal for the casual/moderat email user.

I think an obvious warning is warranted here:

If you don't have the unlimited SMS plan, beware...most people receive a LOT more than 400 e-mails per month, and this method will charge you for every e-mail that comes into your GMail inbox.

Also... wtf? I get like 4 emails a day, tops... maybe 10 if I order something from ebay and they feel the need to let me know 6 times lol.

Yeah, GMail does have an amazing spam filter. Does it not forward EVERY e-mail with that function? Every other e-mail service I've used forwards all e-mail when forwarding is active, no filters are applied.

I think I will be forwarding all my MSN/Hotmail emails to T-mo since one cant add msn to G1 email accounts.

Would be a pain in the a55 though for those who recieve lots of spam/junk...

BTW, with txt msg length limitations this prob means 1 email =/= 1 txt msg (not equal to)

short emails are sent as sms... large ones are mms... there are limits like if you get sent a song or some large file... it just wont attach it and it will tell you the file was too large to be received.. but you still get the text portion of the email.. and you still get pictures.

But it only emails you things sent to your inbox not all your spam mail etc.. inbox only.
