I remember I purchased a Sidekick 2 (about 2 years ago) from an official T-Mobile store in the mall and the guy said I had to have a voice plan to purchase the sidekick 2 at the lowest price available. I didn't have a choice but about a month later I logged on to T-Mobile and was curious to see if I could remove the voice plan. I call up T-Mobile and tell the guy I didn't want the voice plan anymore because I don't use the minutes. The guy just takes it off and I'm only a month into the 2 year contract without the so called requirements (only have a data plan).

Lol, sorry about the long story but I was thinking if this would be possible with a G1? Just take off the voice plan while in the contract? Might sound really stupid. I already have a phone that I use for voice.

BTW, does AIM count as text messages? Thanks in advance guys.

No, you cannot just get a data plan.

I really don't think AIM client on G1 will use SMS.

Having in mind G1 is pretty new - I do not think anyone would take off voice plan just someone does not use the minutes. It was stated what is needed in the order to get G1 - fine print will pretty much decide into Tmobile's favor. Now What happens when you are out of the contract in two years. Then, I think you would have better chances to cancel the voice plan and keep the data. Now, having said that: Tmobile Rep on the announcment was more than clear: We do not want G1 to be INTERNET device but Mobile internet device, pda, cell-phone, PIM, and everything else - not just internet tool :) - well it was not exactly this way but he made the good point - G1 is much more than just internet browser.

There is a pretty substantial deaf community that uses tmobile because they allow them to use data only on the sidekick, as well as other devices. Can you imagine the lawsuit if they didn't?

In special cases they probably would. Best way to find out would be to call them once it is released. Usually in special circumstances (cancelling before contract is over) they'll ask you to fax information proving that the person deceased, or you moved to an area without service, or you were stationed in another country due to military, etc.

i ordered mine 3 days ago(impatiently waiting) and the customer service rep told me if i wanted a data plan i would have to call back AFTER i recieved my phone in the mail. while i will be getting the cheapest data plan( i have the family unlimited messages) i am guessing it is not required as they advertised.

and yes i only paid 179 not full price
