Ok, so I am not in a 3G area. Does that mean my local store will not have the G1 in stock and I have to order it from T-Mobile through the net? Or will they have phones in stock on the 22nd?

According to a member who is a T-Mobile manager, he said this is not true.
He stated that the phone would be available in non 3G markets as well.

Actually, we may have to re-watch it... Didn't he say there would be one in the store to demo on Edge, and if you liked it, you could order one? I don't think they are going to have them in stock in non-3G areas.

I have heard conflicting reports. From what I origonaly understood it was that the non 3G stores will have a demo to try out, if you are satisfied with the speed without 3G you can order one. I hope that is not the case. I don't care about the speed, I will get it regardless. I will eventually have 3g. I want my phone on the 22nd!!!

Well just have to wait till we get more info I guess.
Makes sense to only allow demos first, so people aren't disappointed expecting faster speeds.

What about flex pay customers? Can we order online and pay full retail?

Not until it's released on the 22nd. They haven't said for sure, but I would think if it's going "public" on the 22nd that you will be able to order it at this time.

I thought I heard web ordering only for non-3G areas. I could be wrong.
Oh well, I'll be in that boat.

online ordering only to current tmo customers. stores in the 3G areas are prioritized over non 3 G areas but they will still have it eventually

if it's a timeline you're asking, i don't have an idea and so does the CS who i talked to. you know how it is with these things, deadlines are always never met.

Just talked to a CS rep (I know, I know) and she said they will be in stores in non-3G areas on Oct. 22.

that's nice to know
If your area have no 3G, the phone will still work and fallback to slower connection

Hard to say. How many are you guys going to preorder? T-Mobile can probably give you as an accurate estimate of how many G1s will be available as you could predict the amount which are preordered. ;)
Really the only reason to wait is to get the white one. So just preorder it.

I can't pre order because I am flexpay, that was the reason I started this thread.

I am a Store Manager for T-Mobile. From what my ADR has told me they will not be releasing inventory to Non-3G Areas. My location in Jacksonville, FL will be the only store capable of selling the G1 and this is only because We go through a wholesale company to get our inventory instead of going through T-Mobile directly. The wholesale company rep has informed us they have ordered some stock specifically for our location so my store will be an exclusive dealer of the G1 in the jacksonville, FL area. Hope this clears up any information. They have already sent us a demo model along with a few other stores in my area. as far as ordering, anybody can order the phone online, so the demo to show speeds sounds plausible. I'm guessing they don't want people ordering the phone, being disappointed by network performance and getting pissed at T-Mobile like alot of people do when they get one of our "Free" phones. They're just CTA (covering their ass) if you ask me

We're getting our demo phones this week and once we learn how to use them fully, we are authorized to allow the customers to experience G1

I don't see the connection. A huge percentage of people who will order the phone will already have before demos have gone out.
Demos will benefit tmobile most for the customer who currently has a iphone/smartphone, the customer who isn't super psyched about the product and/or people who have to play with it before they buy it.
Care to elaborate on CTA here?

I know I spoke with one of my local stores here and they told me they wouldn't have them in the stores because we aren't a 3G market. So I went ahead and preordered online even though I couldn't get my white version online. /cry
Oddly enough though when I spoke to a CS rep they acted like my store would have them. Granted I guess they could just think we are a 3G network.

Here's another vague answer... but I heard that the Demo's would be out in the stores on Monday, the 20th... please don't quote me! Of course, rumors are flying everywhere so who knows?

I think the CTA is referring to people walking in and buying the phone at the store. If you are going to order online anyways of course this doesn't apply to you. The demos are so that people in the 2G areas can try out the speed and see if they are satisfied. This is to prevent what happened on the iPhone with people complaining about slow speeds. If the rumors were correct the preorder stock was only 60,000 at most. So a bulk of the phones will probably be sold after Oct 22 (given HTC targets 400,000 by end of 2008) which means a bulk of users will get to try the demo.

This really sucks. I checked the map on T-Mobile and only have 3G when I drive ten minutes south when I am at work. Luckily I have wifi at home

Edge isn't all too bad.
How fast are T-Mo going to expand the 3G map?
It better be fast if they want to be competitive. In business terms, i'd want most places to have 3G by the holidays.
But obviously that's easier said then done.

Yeah most places by the holidays is pretty unlikely, I think they will have a lot though. They are putting them up pretty quickly. It will be worth the wait.

tmo 3g will be in at least 20 major markets by christmas. about a half an hour ago we discussed 3g rollout to non-high density areas such as the I-5 corridor between Seattle and Eugene, OR and the supes indicated that within six months 3g will be in these medium density, but highly traveled areas as well. :)

I seriously hope they don't do this... I don't live in a 3G market, at least not yet. There's a star by Sacramento for "Coming Soon". I'd really like to nab a G1 without having to wait for it to come in the mail (especially because I can't preorder it). I guess I'll stop in the local T-Mobile store on the way to work today and see what they have to say. If worse comes to worse I could go to SF like a psycho and get it.

Just got back from a T-mo store. The guy post-activated my account so it will be all ready come the 22nd, however I'm unable to preorder it due to the fact I won't have a number til the 22nd. That's OK though, they should be able to just put one aside for me.

Hey, I will probably get 3G in 2010, but who cares, I have other handhelds that use wifi - even my ps3 uses wifi and I play games online, so I have no hard feelings.
But since retailers will start selling soon (Oct 26 (http://androidcommunity.com/g1-coming-soon-to-best-buy-20081001/)), I think the stores will carry it too. Else it will be absolutely dumb.
then again, I feel bad for those who are on the second wave (pre-order after today, Oct 3) They recieve theirs about Nov 10... Again, not too smart!
Just saying!

That just really ticks me off. I can't preorder it because I am not eligible for my full discount upgrade until the 13th and they couldn't help me on the phone or order it for me (11 years of service with Powertel/Voicestrea/Tmobile obviously doesn't get you anything). And i can't goto the store launch day and pick one up either unless I want to drive 100 miles to get to the nearest 3G city. And when I can pre-order it on the 13th I won't be able to get it until the 10th. I'm so ticked off about and soured about the whole situation it I may just say screw it and get something else (i.e. BB Bold).
