My wifi always disonnect when the phone is in stand by, so the synching doesn't work.
I have to go back to unsleep my g1 so I see that wifi icon appearing back in the top taskbar. Is this normal? I want to be able to know when I receive email when in sleep mode.

when the phone is in sleep mode, it turns off the wifi to conserve energy. This has always been the case for all smartphones i've ever had. You can always have it plugged in and turn on the setting to keep awake when plugged.

In for answer...
I noticed this issue also a while back. Pretty annoying if you ask me. I can see why they'd want to do this but there should be an option for it at least.

All smartphones that I've had do this. It's dont to conserve energy since Wifi is pretty heavy on the battery.
Like someone stated. Disable the sleep option.

Disabling the sleep mode is stupid... do u think an app can be created for this?

I have a nokia e51 and it doesn't do this...In fact I've owned a number of nokia devices e51, e71, e65, n95 and none of them do this. I leave wifi on all day and it always stays connected

How about the Power Manager program? If you are going to run your wifi all the time, you will want your phone plugged in then.

I think it's pretty standard. Even my Palm TX disables wifi when it suspends. It also disables wifi after a few minutes of network inactivity, by default.
That sucks really. Does it go to 3G in sleep mode too?
What's the point then? I want to be able to be connected all the time and have to receive my notififactions all the time.

I don't see what the big deal is. From all of my use of the G1 it appears to work like this:
1. If you have WiFi on and the screen saver comes on, WiFi shuts off and it goes back to 3G. So you still get all of your notifications (sms, mms, phone calls, email, etc, etc). It just comes over 3G instead of WiFi.
2. IF you are sending / receiving data over WiFi and the screen saver comes on, WiFi stays on until the transfer is done. So for example if you are streaming music over WiFi it will keep playing even after the screen saver comes on.
I think it's great that the WiFi turns off if not in use when the screen saver comes on...saves battery; yet everything still works as you'd expect it to.

What? How do you disable Edge? I only see settings for disabling 3g.
And how would it add up to thousands per month? It's unlimited data.
Are we talking about the same phone and cell carrier....I think you might be on the wrong forums.

The question was referring to the Power Manager program, and yes it is an app in the market with that very title: "Power Manager". Give it a shot.

Bump!
This so-called feature is driving me nuts! Let me choose whether I want to preserve battery by turning of wifi when the phone sleeps!
I haven't checked XDA yet, hopefully someone there has or are able to make a fix for my rooted G1 that tells wifi to stay on no matter what (unless I specifically choose to turn it off).
God, I hate it when manufacturers 'help' me by adding features like these. Reminds me of Palm's irritating text auto correct feature where everytime I wrote ' i ' it became ' I '.

Ditto. I was streming music today and I turned the screen off. A few minutes later the music stopped I turned the screen on to see what was up and I noticed that wifi was off and it was connected to edge instead.

I think help is underway.
I couldn't find it right now, but I'm pretty sure that in one of the articles showing screenshots of cupcake, I saw a new setting regarding wifi sleep behavior.
I will keep looking for it and post a link here when I find it, or others can help find it too, of course!

I noticed this as well. For me If I am using wifi, power isnt an option because I am at home. An option to allow wifi to be on when the phone sleeps is a must. I don't want my apps chewing into my 500mb data allowance.

there's more than one app in the market that prevents this.

These apps are now available that will prevent this:
WiFi Awake
Wifi Insomnia
Keep WiFi
WiFi Lock
Some Free, Some Not, go search for them on the Market and try them out.

I have been using "Wi-Fi Lock" for a few days, and it seems to do the trick.
~Christopher
PS. I think I saw a screenshot from Cupcake somewhere where it appeared that this will in fact be a user option - you can choose whether wifi should sleep or stay on while the phone/display sleeps. But don't trust me 100% on this...

if this option existed there'd be tons of threads titled "OMG MY BATTERY ONLY LASTS 1 HR...Returning".
you gaint some just to loose some, get over it.

If you haven't noticed, there are already tons of such threads.
I guess to prevent it (or if you were Product Manager), the G1 would have hard coded the lowest display backlight, a 10 second display shut-off time, and anything else that could force battery preservation.
In my world, though, the manufacturer treats his customers as intelligent grown-ups able to make decisions on their own...
I am able to choose the brightness of the display, I can choose the shut-off time of the display, why should I not be able to choose whether wifi stays on all the time or not?

ToggleWiFi has a new update in which it will automatically switch back to WiFi after the sleep mode is off. Loves it!

i've never used ToggleWifi.
So it implements a feature already available in the OS?
if wifi is enabled and you are connected to one of your preffered access points,
the phone will automatically reconnect when you wake up the phone.

Guys, guys! There is no need to install 3rd party software. Android has this option implemented, it's diesabled by default though. All you need to do is go to settings, wireless & networks, wi-fi settings, tap the menu button, advanced and there you have wi-fi sleep policy. Just switch it to never and voila!
