I think the G1 should have multi-touch because it can expand games and all kind of apps on the G1. The web is fine the way it is but it would be a good option for people who like the iphone feel when it comes to the web and pictures...What do you think about having MT??? I just want to know since we know for sure the G1 can have it..

Why would anybody argue against MT being implemented?

It would be sick

no, it is not an iPhone and I'm glad it is not.

either way im happy. i really dont need a multi-touch because it works just fine, but if it had it, yes the Ninja Chuck Norris Android would happily use it.

why not have multitouch. as long as its done well and is actually useful rather than gimmicky then I'm all for it

Why not?

If Google implemented it Apple would sue the living hell out of Google because they own the all the patents for any form or implementations of a multi-touch capacitive screen.

The phone supports it. Just hasn't been fully implemented in Android. Do a search. http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/g1-capable-of-multi-touch-input-looks-like-it-7600/?highlight=multi-touch

i'd like it for sure, the UX advantages are boundless

That depends on the gestures they're planning on using, if Google even has any plans to adopt multi-touch at all. The iPhone has a pretty slick set of gestures that pretty much any end user can pick up within a second or two but I think Apple has already patented them. It'd be interesting to see what Google comes up with.

As an aside, I don't understand all the hatred towards the iPhone. It's an amazing piece of hardware/software and has definitely raised the standards upon which other devices are being judged by -- the G1 included.

I read that they don't...they have the patents on certain gestures and 4-7 finger use or whatever but they don't own the patent to multi-touch because frankly they didn't invent it.

Hardware wise the G! is capable of multitouch...it is a UI limitation as of now.

I for one don't need it...but it'd be nice...especially when the VKB comes in january (god willing)

MT would be great if it could be disabled. That way those who don't want it don't have to use it and those who do, can. And I'm sure Google could caress a little of the patent issue down -- even if Apple DID own patents on MT itself -- for allowing iPhone to have Google Earth before the G1.

Although I still don't see the benefit of Google Earth over maps for the phone, aside from MAYBE doing KML, though that's a topic for another thread...

I think it could add to the G1 but the G1 is perfect as it is. I just want to see how everyone felt about it. The Iphone is a good phone but I would pick the G1 anyday over it, I just cant wait for better games for the G1

apple to oranges, iphone to G1....cmon they r two different animal, pros and cons on both phones .....you be the judge....having them both together in your hands....the more the merrier..........hhhoooooooowaaaaaaaa...

we know for sure the G1 can have it..

Sorry I haven't been keeping up on this debate.. last i heard some guy found some coding that had disabled multitouch and was able to 'enable' it or something proving that the hardware can indeed support it...

But then I heard that Steve Jobs called him a "Doo-Doo Head" thus rendering his validity as a coder non-substantial.

I completely agree. If you really don't want to use it then you don't have to and can use the phone just the same as you do now. I don't see any downside to having MT.

Well, there is a possible downside of having that extra bit of code potentially bugging things up, perhaps leading to crashes which otherwise wouldn't happen, but if it's disablable then it should be like a module on the linux kernel: when not in use, it's nonexistent. e.g., can't cause bugs, doesn't get run, doesn't slow down the phone.

I must have read that wrong.. I saw "tired of the G1 and iPhone being compared as though they're supposed to be equal" but I guess a comparison is a comparison.. and hypocritical or not, I like her comparison :D

I’d probably enjoy using MT if it were available and made sense for the apps. It would also have to be stable and not overly tax the available resources.

Obviously not a requirement, because I didn’t buy the G1 expecting it to have MT, but could be a ‘nice to have’ enhancement if it were to come along.

Stating that my phone is better than another is hardly indicating that I wish my phone had all of said other phone's features. Actually what my sig is saying is that I'm GLAD my phone isn't like the other, because mine is better.

Let me rephrase for the idiots:

I'm tired of everyone wishing the G1 was an iClone.
